It's not a coin, or it would have some denomination and a country of issue on it. It also looks like it's been cast, that's where they por the molten metal into a mold. where as coins are usually solid metal thats been smashed between two dies. I think it's some type of jewellry. But it might be a medal or award of some sort.
Could you post closer up photos? Looks like a medal of some sort to me but I can't venture to guess what kind.
Looks like a souvenir trinket. I have seen similar. The obverse is copying an ancient Greek coin, the reverse is a picture of the acropolis. No authentic ancient coins looked like that. My bet is it was bought either in Greece on a vacation, or a Greek related store. It sure would look cool around the neck. The reverse is worn more than the obverse, so you can see that is what happened. Chris
Thank you everyone for your responses. I am in agreement that its some sort of trinket, it must be cast and not stamped..there is evidence of sanding around the edges. I cant get a closer picture, no macro feature on the camera so those pics were as close as i could get without it being totally blurry.
Your right. I agree entirely I thought about that after I posted. Initialy when I first looked at it, I thought It was a woman in a bonnet. Like 1800's North america.
Its an imitation of a Corinthian stater, which itself was widely imitated in its colonies. Its arguably the second or third most widely known widely known ancient coin design, (i would say only Athenian tets and Alexander being more widely known, yeah i know I said its arguable ). Chris
the only ancient coins I have are some Roman bronze/copper pieces; some of them are so corroded it's hard to even tell they're coins. Different issue than yours, but still an identification problem.
