A gang of Libyan looters have raided a priceless collection of gold and silver coins that are believed to date back to the time of Alexander the Great.

The thieves carried off with the pieces, known as The Treasure of Benghazi, having drilled through a concrete ceiling at the National Commercial Bank of Benghazi.

An expert has described the raid as 'one of the greatest thefts in archeological history'.

Sad, Cyrene coins are one of my favorites, and something like this will probably lead to a ban on imports. I am all for catching the losers who did it, but was actually hoping Cyrene coins may become more available with the fall of Khadaffi.

As for "one of the greatests thefts in archeological history", I doubt that. Archeologists hate coins anyway, that is why this collection was sitting in a basement without any archeologist trying to learn anything from them.

I think it'd be more accurate to say that archaeologists have pulled off the greatest thefts in archaeological history. I suspect this one pales compared to some of theirs.
