Imitating Lostdutchman's thread is intended to flatter, not to plagiarize. What would you do with this? Note It is a Rare (R5) S-147. Also, some of what appears to be damage is a prior strike such as the damage at the face being the back of the head of a prior strike. For those not familiar with Large Cent current variety rarity ratings, R5 indicates 46-60 estimated examples in existence. In the past, it covered 30-75 but has been split into R5+ (30-45), R5 (46-60) and R5- (61-75). The middle rating of the new usage causes the most confusion with the old broader usage.
Wow - this is tougher than I thought. Not much I can pull from the web. Hmmm - going to have to think about it some more.
Looking at Heritage prices realized, CQR, and using my own judgement I would price this coin at $ 100-170. It is just too scudzy to warrant more. Heritage in particular lists 9 sales in the last 10 years. Some nice examples in VG10-VF20 (with moderate corrosion) selling for $ 600-250, max. $ 170 seems reasonable for this example.
Eduard is probably more accurate than I ever could be. My final price would have been around $100. Simply because I could not see myself giving more than that.
This consistent with my view that rarity alone will set a floor of around $100 for R5, no matter how worn or scudzy. Any amount of pleasantness will drive the price toward $200 and really nice R5 coins, even in lower grade can approach $600-$800. Then again, R6s seem to have a floor around $1500. R4s do not seem to carry more than a 50% premium and those are usually for nicer condition coins which already carry a premium for condition.
On a buying day, I'd pay up to $150 for that coin myself, but I'd make a terrible dealer since I can't price these things very well. I happen to think the strike is _neat_ and would pay more for it based on that alone. I will pay a premium for an R4/R4+ coin, but anything less and I'm cheap. I'm too poor to afford R6 coins and unfortunately we're not the only ones scouring eBay auctions looking for them ;-)
