I was imaging some coins yesterday and revisited some FE's. Pretty sweet couple of cuds on the reverse. Is this pretty normal for flying eagles? Don't you hate when you make a post and notice you mispelled something in the title? I know I do!
Yeah, it sure is. At least you can edit your post to correct a word you have misspelled in your post.
I am not sure if cuds...or die damage in general...was a particular problem with FEC's but we do know that the Mint struggled with them. Due to lobbying the Mint director decided to use a 12% nickel alloy. Planchets were thinner than pure copper large cents, and harder. Speculation is that the FEC didn't last long because it was difficult to strike. Full details in eagle's tail feathers are hard to find, e.g. Perhaps die failure was a problem. I have a only passing interest in FEC's so maybe someone with more knowledge can weigh in. Lance.
