Put simply, yes there are thousands of each of the 4 designs graded, particularly in proofs. I have easy access to the NGC populations, and there are roughly 13,500 of each of the 4 designs graded in proof. Of these, roughly 2000 of each type were graded as PF70UC by NGC.

For the uncirc coins, remember that the 2009 cents in the mint sets are different from those released for circulation. Those in mint sets are called "Satin Finish" or SMS cents, and they were minted in 95% copper (the same composition as the 1909 cent). The SMS cents weigh 3.11 grams, but the regular circulation cents weigh in at only 2.5 grams. There are both Philly and Denver versions of each and also SMS and non-SMS (circulation) strikes of each (for a total of 4 designs x 2 mints x 2 strikes = 16 different cents).

The populations for the 8 different SMS cents are right around 1,500 each graded by NGC. The populations for the 8 non-SMS circulation cents are all around 1,500 or more already graded.

I will say that these cents are relatively cheap to purchase already graded. I have all 8 of the SMS cents, all graded MS69RD, and I got a smoking good deal on them for $23 each on eBay. You may want to consider just buying them graded instead of spending your time, money, and effort (and patience) on sending them in yourself.

    Good luck!

wow, does seem like pretty high numbers. i also did not readlize the uncirc set had the copper composition. it may well serve my interests to be patient and find an already slabbed set, at least i would know for sure before sending in a couple of duds, lol
    thanks

    Pennies Pennies Pennies

    Great info thanks!

Also, Is there any value in the 2009 LINCOLN COIN & CHRONICLES SET (LN6) ?
I too was looking for a graded set of all 16 of the Pennies. Have yet to see any pop up on ebay with 69 or 70.

Maybe I will just go for non-graded on these, thoughts on that?

Lastly, is there any value in grabbing the rolls that are wrapped in the special printed paper opposed to the standard wraps?
