Hi, I have two silver coins to identify. Could anyone tell me what they are and roughly what they're worth? Thanks, Emily
The first one is simply a 1 oz silver round, a generic "coin" holding 1 troy ounce of silver. It has no numismatic value beyond the current price of silver, which, at the moment, is $33 and change per troy ounce. I am unfamiliar with the second coin.
I believe that the second coin is Japanese from the shape of some of the characters, but I could be wrong on that.
So I was wrong it's Chinese, I just found it using a Google search. Attached is the link. http://www.chinesesilvercoins.com/chinese-silver-dollar-bullion-coins/chinese-silver-yuan-coins/ .
One thing that is a dead giveaway that it is NOT Japanese-- it has a portrait. With the exception of one or two modern commemoratives, Japanese coins do not carry portraits.
I don't know that the silver round is a fake, but the thought certainly crossed my mind especially when I saw the other piece. You should weigh it; it should be 31.1 grams.
