Evening all, So at the advice of my wife I made a spreadsheet of my coin collection. My final tally comes out to 227 coins. However now I see that I'm seriously lacking in the Nickel and Dime departments, as in I only have 5 Dimes and 6 Nickels, ouch! For some reason I just don't gravitate towards them. Anybody else have this kind of hole in your collection? Does it bother you as greatly as I now am? acing: Take care, Matt
I have a shield nickel in my collection, I want to get more but my incomplete Indian Head Cents, and Peace Dollars stop me from doing so It doesn't bother me though it makes me want to finish my Indian Head Cents faster though which is a good thing and a bad thing. Dan
Always plenty of time to fill the gap in your collection. Don't rush. I have maybe 2 seated coins and no barber coinage in my collection.
Like Mark said, you have plenty of time to find yourself venturing down those paths (hopefully anyways). I have a lot of series I don't have any coins for and the way I see it, that leaves me another adventure down the road. Guy
I have a medium grade Buffalo collection I started when I was a kid, will finish that someday. Picked up a few unc Buffalos years ago, and the only other nickels I have are in my type collection. Not interested in Jeffersons at the moment, but not a bad series and more affordable than Buffalos. I also have a medium grade Merc collection I started when I was a kid, will finish that someday. Picked up a few unc Mercs and Roosies years ago, and the only other dimes I have are in my type collection. Not interested in Roosies at the moment, but not a bad series and more affordable than Mercs. With all the "interest" in bullion these days and prices down on key dates, it may be a good time to work on those and copper & nickel. Collect what you like.
As Mark and Guy say, no rush. I love traveling down an unexplored road. Coin collecting should be about the journey, not the destination. Where would the fun be in that? Chris P.S. Btw Matt, when I say no rush I mean it. I have collected over 30 years now, and my collection is probably around 30k coins, and I feel like I have just started. It really is the journey, the education, and the friendships you make along the way.
I just turned 30 this year I guess I need to up my game to get to anywhere near 30K coins lol. I hope we all have many more years of collecting ahead of us.
I'll be 30 in May of next year. How does hitting the big 3-0 feel? If it's anything like hitting 20 or 25, then I'm looking forward to it. =) I have somewhere between 500 and 600 coins in my collection, nearly all foreign coins. If I had 30k like medoraman I might just take a swim in them.
Lol, surprisingly, that many coins does not take up much room. I am lucky I am a hoarder of coins, or else my house would be in rough shape. Don't make fun of me too much, 30+ years, never sold a coin, and a fondness for group lots will add up in the coin count quickly. Chris
If you don't automatically gravitate towards them, then don't try to. Keep on going as you are. Evidently it didn't bother you before, don't let it bother you now.
I think everyone has holes or great big gaps in their collections. I know I do but as has been said that just leaves me with glorious hunts in the future. I may never fill all the holes, which is fine with me. I can always do short sets and the like. I was lucky that my late Father in Law had been a dealer and had some nice coins covering everything from IHC to Ikes. He had nothing like complete sets and he had sold any really rare coins years ago but still left me with a great starting point to work from. Just enjoy the ride, don't stress and always do what makes you happy.
I have a similar spreadsheet that I started over 10-years ago. I'm over 11,000 coins now. Of course, I count everything including rolled stuff but only count the mint and proof sets as one. I must say that it is getting bigger with time. I love this hobby! I love to count stuff.
I wish I did. My number was from a few years ago when I got divorced. To be fair I am an accountant, so going home and counting stuff would be like a busman's holiday I suppose. My count does not include things like bags of wheat cents and the like. It does count rolls of morgans, barbers, and similar. Either way you and I have a problem, huh Phil?
Issues? Me; no way! Yes, I'm really into spreadsheeting stuff. I think that I have my entire life on a spreadsheet. Hey, I'm not a nerd. I was captain of the chess team in high school
Jefferson's are a fun set to go after and close. You can easily get all of them. The question is, in what grade do you want? I have that set complete and when I can I upgrade each one to some MS condition. I was not to gun ho about Jeffs in the beginning, but I tell you I am very proud of that set. Like some of the other in this thread have mentioned, part of the fun is organizing all the coins in a spreadsheet or coin inventory program. I do both and I still mistakenly buy duplicates sometimes.
As a working actuary, numbers & math have always been a part of my DNA. I find collecting/sorting/ listing my coins to be my favorite part of the hobby...
If it bothers you, I would point out that right now is a great time to collect copper/nickel coins while everyone is focused on silver.
That's a fact! I started out in love with my quarters and halves... But as silver climbed, I got further into my Jeffs and fell in love. It has turned into my favorite set, and was fun putting together.
