I'm pretty much a US coin collector, but I really like some of the new Canadian designs. I just picked up their Silver $20 "Canoe" coin...(my first one).

Are there any other modern Canadian collectors out there?

hmm, interesting design. Haven't seen this one before. I like how the reflection he's holding a paddle, (similar to the old dollar coins) and the non-reflection he's not.

Kind of a modern take on the early voyageur Canadian dollars. The RCM puts out some amazing pieces. Thanks for sharing!

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

Also, in the reflection, it looks like the man is looking forward, but in the non-reflection it looks like a space alien looking toward the viewer. If you enlarge the photo, you'll see this.

And the reflection does not have a hood on it's jacket or a jacket.

And it looks like cushions or packages in the canoe in the reflection, but none in the non-reflection canoe.

The bow of the canoe is much taller in the reflection, too.

Makes me want to ask, Yak, is this a real coin or are you pulling our legs?

Then I looked it up and found this on the RCM website:
The story, as told by the artist Jason Bouwman
The canoe has become as much a part of the Canadian visual lexicon as the Canada goose, the beaver and the maple leaf. This design shows a young person enjoying a recreational outing. The boy breaks from paddling to dip his hand in the water… and touches the past – the reflection reveals an early native paddler (or voyageur) in a traditional birch-bark canoe as it also appears on the early silver dollar of 1935.

Everything is now explained, except the boy looking like an alien.

I collect mostly Canadian Modern stuff. I haven't got this one yet, but I did pick up the other one shortly after it came out. I'd like to see the RCM turn these into a series, like the wildlife bullion ones. But for now they don't seem to care. Maybe next year though.

moneyer12 i just love UK coins.......

canadian coins are in danger of becoming as banal and dross as the NCLT coins of liberia and somalia......so many insideous issues as of late.

i've thought about purchasing one of these as well, because it would pair up nicely with my 1963 canadian voyageur dollar.

Yakpoo, That is a very beautiful coin. I like the past/present idea of this commemorative. Someone was thinking!

Thanks for the background...I wasn't pulling any legs...I actually though it was some prehistoric Canuck and a Space Alien! :too-funny:

Oh well...I still like the design. I like these designs, too...

I was just thinking...if Bernard von Nothaus put "Canada" on his coins, he might still be in business!:thumb:
