Why are we criticizing him? He makes a good point and I see what he is talking about sometimes here on the forums.
Regardless of your grammar and punctuation, you make a very valid point Ricky. I've often noticed how harsh we are as a community to newbies. There are many first timers on this forum whose questions may seem elementary to the advanced collector, but they're really just seeking knowlege about this great hobby. Sometimes I wince at the tone of the responses certain individuals give these newcomers. But we owe them some measure of respect, and usually, unless the post is rude or offensive, also the benefit of the doubt. In the spirit Peter intended when he conceived this forum, we should always be respectful and generous with our knowlege, it helps the hobby writ large and presents a better image of coin collectors as a whole. I think perhaps we can all learn something from this nine year old.
There is always a tension between education and dominance. The difference is in the intent of the person doing the correction. There is also a tension between learning and defensiveness. The difference is in the attitude of the one being corrected. You have no control over the former, but a wise young person will always choose to learn from correction without regard to it's intended purpose. Now tact is a different matter. When giving bad news about counterfeits and fakes to a newbie, you may be flippant and harsh, and risk losing a fellow collector; or, you may offer a sympathetic word about how the mistake can be avoided in the future.
May I give praise to the members who take the time to wholeheartedly welcome newcomers. They are extremely considerate and respectful in their responses. I know who they are , and so can you, by seeing who is the first responder to the posts in the "introduction" subforum. As to grammar and spelling, many of our posters are not English proficient, and are posting via translator software. I belong to a couple of forums that use a common language other than English, and I struggle. Maybe in another decade, forums will be limited to "tweets" of 140 characters per post and we will all be using the common abbreviations therein. Jim
Not to kick anybody but kind of surprised that this thread has not been moved as it does not discuss U S Coins. And as a note that spelling and grammar do make ones threads more readable but if it bothers one too much one does not have to reply. And as noted Edits are possible.
You can get on him now because he used and when he should have used at: Word of advice vdb, you shouldn't point out other's faults unless you see your own.
Honestly, this is a casual forum for people to post, talk, communicate with one another. People should care less about grammar and spelling unless it's just bad enough where it's not understood what the person is trying to communicate. People should only care about grammar and spelling if it's a formal type paper, perhaps school work or for work, which in that case, I doubt anyone's going to be posting their homework on a casual forum. Only the teacher or employer paying the person should care about such mistakes. That's my Two Cents on the matter!
