English 10 shillings

Someone on eBay has a 1970 10 shilling coin listed from England. They only show a photo of the reverse. Doing a quick Google search I can't find the existance of such a coin. I'm wondering if there really is such a thing or if this person just screwed up?

If it is, I doubt it's a 10 Shilling coin. Anything is possible though.
By the looks of it, this seller isn't a collector or dealer. There are other coins which are listed that he/she is unable to describe as well.

 

Yeah, that's the one. I collect British coins and I thought the price was pretty good if it's a coin I don't have, but I don't want to buy it and find out it's a half crown or something like that.

 

I don't think that can be a 1970 since that is the old portrait and not the portrait that was updated and given a tiara in the late 1960s.

 

Yeah, the seller either messed up and added a "0" to a 1 Shilling coin or is just a scammer.

Also, it's listed as circulated and by all appearances it seems to be uncirculated.

 

If it were 1970, it would have been a 5 New Pence coin, rather than a shilling.
But the portrait is wrong for 1970 anyway.

 

On a side note, this following title on eBay really gets my goat:

"WORLD COIN LOT! UNSEARCHED. GOLD? SILVER?"

C'mon now! Really?

firstly the uk has never isued a 10 shilling coin, the obverse portrait on this coin was last used for the 1970 set which was the last pre-decimal set issued by the mint.

 

Well, I had to do some research on that to clear my mind up. It looks like even though the original 1953 portrait had been replaced with the tiara portrait in the late '60s, and the 5 New Pence coin was first issued in 1968 to replace the shilling, the old shilling coin with the old portrait was minted one last time, in 1970, for sentimental reasons I guess.

 

I know they made special proof coins of the old denominations in 1970, because I have them all (I think I have them all anyway), and I thought this might be a half crown. Would it kill the seller to put a photo of the front side? I would have emailed a question, but by the time I saw the auction I knew I wouldn't likely get an answer before it ended. From what everyone says here, it sounds like there's no 10 shilling coin so I don't have to worry about missing out. Thanks!

Oh, I also agree Collector about words like "scarce" and "rare" in eBay auctions. Or when they describe a coin as "vintage." But I could go on all day about that.

 

I just looked and saw someone asked the seller what it was and he replied it was 2 shillings. That answers that. Don't know where he got 10 shillings from.

 

Easy -- he was writing in binary.

 

2 shillings = 10 pence

So maybe he got confused! If 1970, it'll be one of the proof coins minted for the "Last of the £sd set" proof set dated 1970 (but which were minted until 1975, in fact). Mintage 750,000.

10 shillings = 1010 pence

in binary.

 

If there was a 10 shilling coin, would that be 2 crowns?
