Hello everyone ! Here is a lot of 5 silver coins I got today, I have no idea what they are ! can anyone help please ?
the last one: 1 Mariengroschen von Johann Friedrich Herzog von Calenberg (1665 - 1679). Geprägt ohne Jahrgang um 1675. http://www.muenz-board.com/wbboard2/jgs_galerie_userbilder.php?kategorie=10&bildid=14&sid=ae8bccc784125c952ef550ef59f1ac22
Also, the first one I think,is of Francis I who became Holy Roman Emperor,Maria Theresa's hubby & Marie Antoinette's daddy..so yes,Austrian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_I,_Holy_Roman_Emperor The other two are of Leopold I, also a Holy Roman Emperor died in 1705. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_I,_Holy_Roman_Emperor Where are you getting these coins IC? It's very unusual to come across unattributed batches of hammered coins like that.
I was guessing austria for the crowned double headed eagle with the 1 on the breast. Made me think of a similar coin I had, but it was a 30 kreuzer, I believe
Thank you SO MUCH for all the help, I will have otherwise no idea what they are. I bought them in a lot from Germany. By the way, what 'Hammered' means ?
Hammered is the method of manufacture. Prior to the use of presses to strike coins it was actually done with a hammer. The minter would place a planchet ( known as a flan at the time) on the anvil die which was set into a large block of wood. Then he would place the hammer die on top of it and strike the hammer die with a hammer. Simple as that.
Here are some pics of a medieval coiner and some real dies that were found. check out this link Doug! Then keep clicking on "next"......fascinating stuff! http://www.segoviamint.org/english/tech/dies.htm
Just to clarify, the first one is actually from Bremen, Germany. I have the same coin dated 1748 and I paid $7.51 for it. It is a tiny thing, smaller than a dime and if you look carefully it has "Brem" just before the date. The third coin from the left(or right) is a 1 kruezer coin of Austria and is dated 1693 under Leopold I.
