The 79-S is a nice coin, the obverse is Prooflike, but the reverse definitely isn't, so it didn't get the PL designation (Probably would have gotten a star if it went to NGC). The PL fields on the obverse are going to exaggerate the hits more so than non PL fields, but I think the 64 grade is accurate. Only problem I see is the price, with the PL obv, it's probably going to bring more than the average '79-S. Personally, I'd pick the '79 over the '98, especially considering the '98 pics aren't that good.
That is what I was thinking as well.. I like the overall appearance of the 79 and it most likely would have gotten the star for eye appeal at ngc. I felt the price will go over the budget amount as well.. It is a nice coin overall and the nicest of the 2.
Arrrr... I decided to focus on the 1879, and I put in my max bid with 39 seconds left. I was the high bidder, and then BAM!!! With 8 seconds left someone outbid me by $4. Oh well. Time to begin the search all over again. Does anyone have a lead for me?
Yes. Thank you. I can't figure out how to filter through them easily. Here are who more eBay item numbers I am watching. It's really hard from me to tell by the pictures on the screen, hence why I truly appreciate everyone help so much. Here are the item numbers: 120791635355 OR 280751534684 Again, which if either we recommended? Thank you very kindly!
On that site they are in date order just choose the US coins group then dollars... the Morgans are all grouped together...
I like the 78S Heritage is selling and you gotta love the photos they provide, and as you can see the obverse does have a good hit on both the cheek and the tip of the nose..
I have been duped at the last second in an auction again. I will now be looking at coins with the "Buy It Now" feature. I have 3 coins I am watching, and would appreciate thoughts on all three. As I am still having trouble positions a link, here are the eBay item numbers: 140610549440 OR 180217661141 OR 130580733855 Which do you recommend, and why? OR, is there another coin you would recommend. Again, my goal is to make a sound purchaes. I sincerely appreciate all the help! Thank you!
If you're looking for an '81-S, this might be one to watch, it looks like a solid 64 with great luster/strike. 1881-S MORGAN DOLLAR 140610549440- I don't like the dull gray color, and the luster looks weak. 180217661141- Can't tell much from the pics. 130580733855- Don't like those spots on the reverse.
I like that choice also and definitely agree with the reasons for not looking further at the other auctions..
Honestly, to the OP, I would recommend buying the VAM book and a good grading guide. The best money to spend getting into Morgans would be the best reference books and to learn how to grade well. That advice I repeat for all collectors in a new field. Chris
Thank you all again. I will follow that coin. Is there any others you could recommend? I really am ready to buy one way or the other and would like to watch more than one in hopes I may actually emerge a with a coin instead of getting beat out again. I am really open to any date except 1880, or 1900.
When it comes to ebay, I always just snipe auctions. I use snip.pl. I place bids, and if I win I win. I find if you hope too much you end up talking yourself into too much money. The great thing about sniping services is I can place my snipes, and if I win too much cancel the rest. You cannot cancel ebay bids. Also, I only pay about $.10 per successful snipe, and never have to be at the computer when the auction is ending.
Brian, I'm not going to recommend a coin, but I will give you a bit of advice. You're submitting your bid way too soon. At 39 seconds left, you're giving the competition about 35 seconds to place another bid which is more than enough time for them to outbid you. You should be placing the bid with only 2-5 seconds left. That way, by the time your bid is recorded, the auction will be over. Yes, it is possible that the (former) high bidder had entered a max bid greater than yours so that person would win in any event, but if they are trying to outguess the competition and win it as cheaply as possible, your only chance for winning is to be the last person to bid. You will also have to contend with the possibility that some of the bidders are using a bidding service to place "snipe" bids for them. In these cases, you won't even know that someone is following the auction because they enter the information with the bidding service and the bidding service places their bid automatically with 2-5 seconds left. If you want to get an idea of how many people have viewed the listing and how many people are "tracking" the auction, you can go to this site, enter the listing # and see for yourself. http://www.watchcount.com/ Chris
