today in change from the store i got a 2000 nickle, what is weird is that it has rainbow toning. i was told that only silver coins get rainbow colors and nickle just turn a dull grey. was i mis-informed? or is my nickle something to hold on to? i will hopefully have a good pic of it up tomorrow, my camera is screwing up and the pics it takes would only show up as blurry and not readable. so tomorrow i will post a pic.
Hi tony, toning can occur on any coin regardless of it's composition. Silver definitely reacts more to certain environments, but all coins can tone depending on where they are stored.
It's hard to tell from the picture if the toning is natural or due to some sort of foregin substance. Would love to see some nice, clear macro shots of both sides!
Looks baked. Coins like this are commonly seen on eBay. Easy to make, and easy to make money off of. It takes and experienced eye to be capable of pointing out an artificially toned coin from a naturally toned coin. But, in the end, it's all subjective... Like just about every other topic of numismatics, Haha. -Brian
You strictly collect these toned Jeffs, gbroke? If so, I saw a couple of really nice ones on Teletrade for their Sunday-starting auction. Want a link? -Brian
