I just came across these 2 Nickels a 1961 and 1966. They appear to be proofs to me but not sure. Can some one tell me if they are proofs or not. Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't believe they made proofs in 1966. The 1961 looks like a proof, but not the 1966(proof like maybe). Just my opinion - wait for an expert on these.

Mark is correct they did not make proofs in 1966. They did have special mint sets. I believe they are both business strikes. They appear to be pretty well struck business strikes. However, the reverse would be much more defined if it was a proof strike. It could just be the images, but that's my opinion. The 1966 is most definitely a business strike.

The 66 does look business strike to me as well, the center of the reverse is rather mushy looking...

+1 And the 1961 would have more defined features on the reverse if it were a proof.

Even if the 61 was a proof, it most likely isn't proof quality anymore..

Hmmm, I have a 1965 nickel that looks similar. Mine doesn't have a good strike, however.

P.S. It has a minor die clash.

EDIT: The 3 posts above appeared when I posted this.
