I just made my first foray into attempting to upgrade coins in PCGS Old Green Holders. I submitted three OGH coins to PCGS for re-grading -- and two of the three got a bump-up by 1 grade -- giving me a $1,100 paper profit via the higher grades. So I lost the OGH's, but got higher grades on 2. Still some might argue I should have kept the OGH's. It was an interesting experiment. Here are the three coins: This was just re-graded as PR-66, previously a PR-65 (OGH) This was re-graded as PR-63, previously a PR-62 (OGH) Finally this coin remained at the MS-64 RB level
Interesting...I've only got one OGH. I think I'll keep it an OGH though...not worth the fees for a bump if it got it Very nice 3 cent piece.
Second attachment isn't showing. All my mercs, are of course, as you two should know, OGH. Not really worth resubmitting them, but I'm sure a few would get a bump.
Sometimes bumps is good........as long as they don't involve sensitive parts of the anatomy. Congrats on the bumps WingedLiberty.
Based on the images, I feel they were already worth the higher price. I'm not sure the new holder actually added any value. Either way they are really nice.
PezDspncr, I totally agree, if the price spread is not big, it's not worth losing the OGH. MercCrazy, all those OGH's must be beautiful. I actually like the green color of the labels a bit more than the blue. LDHair, I hear what you are saying. Some people pay big premiums for OGHs. You are right though, the toning on those coins would drive a premium anyway. rev1774 and green18, thanks! That three cent piece really jazzed me when I saw it. I thought it was one of the nicest examples I've seen.
From what I see, if the coin warrants it, OGH coins command the higher grade price. But, an upgrade does somewhat avoid the "haggling".
MercCrazy, and don't forget the $10 reholder fee ... more if regrading Thanks robec! Yes on the TrueViews. The Three Cent Piece changes color depending on the view and lighting angle, which is cool. Phil picked the view with bolder color but no luster, the coin actually has a lot of luster and more green from another angle (shown in the photo in the OP). For the Two Cent piece, I chose the photo shot by Todd of BlueCCPhotos as my master shot (shown in the OP), I prefer Todd's shot (above) to Phil's TrueView shot (below) on that coin. Todd did a much better job with the contrast on the coin and the legends are much easier to read. The results I've gotten from Phil of TrueView have definitely been more mixed of late, he used to be very consistent and premier, but over the past few months, I've gotten photos from him that I actually don't like and aren't useable (to me at least). One advantage of using a private photographer over TrueView, is they are much less busy and take a lot more time with the coins. Phil only has about 5 to 10 seconds per coin and shots thousands of coins a day -- and the work can suffer at times (even with Phil's monster advantage of no slab plastic in the way). However I must say that sometimes, Phil at TrueView can produced incredible monster shots that take your breath away.
Have to say that I prefer the first shot rather than these for the 3cent piece.. The same holds true for the 2cent as well..
Yes, I totally agree rev1774. It's interesting when you send the same coin to be photographed by multiple people -- you really get a range of results. Did you ever see some of the coin photographing contests run on the PCGS boards? They are fascinating. You get to see one coin photographed by 20+ photographers and the range of results is truely mind boggling.
I would imagine each photo would be different as the person photographing it has their own perspective and perception as to what they like/think looks best.. As to the half dollar.. I don't see a big difference between the photos on that piece (imo) however, I like the background on the first image and feel it just enhances the overall look.
100% correct rev1774. That's one of the reasons I really want to get my own photographic system set up. I know exactly what I like and what I don't -- and that's so much easier than trying to convey that information to someone else. We all think that our own taste is best (LOL).
Hey, I just thought of something. I think I might have been able to accomplish the upgrade process without losing the OGH. I should have submitted these 3 coins to CAC ... and I if got the Gold Sticker (the Gold Bean) it means the coin will likely upgrade to the next grade. So an OGH with a gold sticker really means, add 1 level to the assigned grade. That's the perfect workaround.
Beautiful coins! Congrats on the upgrades. I take it the 1864 OGH slab is still intact? You didn't crack before you submitted I hope?
Very nice coins. And that 3 center is great. At $1,100 I'd probably break them out too if I was wanting to sell.
