I need your help in identifying this coin further. The coin is made of copper, and is close to the size of a US Quarter and thinner than a US Penny. The closes I can come to identifying this coin is the Maryland (Lord Baltimore) Coinage.???? I believe everything matches up good with the exception of two things. On the obverse just under the head is a Small Five Point Star not seen on the known Maryland Coinage. On the reverse the Calvert Coat of Arms Shield (not the crown) appears to be a little different even though it’s hard to see. I could be wrong there though. The crown matches up good in all the books I have. It’s hard to see in the pics but, it does appear to have a Cross no top of the Crown. Possibly an unknown variant of the Baltimore Coinage, wouldn’t that be nice. I say possible Lord Baltimore Coin because, the coin does have very early family ties to Maryland and has always been in the family and now it’s public knowledge. I may be able to take better pics, if you need them just ask and I’ll see what I can do. Please, send me in the right direction in finding more information out on this coin books, contacts, ect.. Any and All in-put will be greatly appreciated. I am stumped. Thanks in advance for your help. Sincerely, Tom
The reverse appears to be the lozenged shield, surmounted by a crown, but the obverse is so obscured it's beyond my identification ability without having it in hand for a better review.
Thank you for your input coinman. I have some new information on the coin in the photos. I found out that it may have possible family ties to Benedict Calvert the Fourth Lord Baltimore, that’s all I can say for now. I researched the lozenge shield online and compared the shield on this coin to the shields I found. I could not find a match. Not to say, that there isn't one out there. There’s just too many to look through. It could possibly be a lozenge shield on the reverse but, I don't see the diamond shape that’s associated with them. Correct me if I'm wrong but, the lozenge shield is essentially associated with women, for the display of their coats of arms. Would it have been common of that time period, for them to put a lozenge shield on there coinage? The Bust on the obverse and the position of the letters even though hard to see, do look very similar to the letters and Bust on the obverse of the Lord Baltimore Coinage. I do believe this coin has the bust of Cecil Calvert. Please folks, I need more input on this coin. I know the coin is not in the best of shape but, together we can try to figure this one out. I will continue to research the coin online and if I come across any new information, I will up date my thread here. Thanks again in advance for any help and your comments.
I am not sure what it is, but it does not appear to be a Lord Baltimore coin. The only Baltimore coin made of copper is the extremely rare penny, and your coin does not match. The bust on the Baltimore penny is smaller and farther from the lettering, and the lettering on the reverse of your coin that is visible does not match that on the Baltimore penny. The Lord Baltimore penny is also smaller than a quarter. Your coin appears to be a foreign coin or Jetton of some sort.
Thank you for taking time out of your day, to respond to my post. I’ve never heard of a Jetton before and now I have a whole new direction of research to take. A quick question, is a Jetton similar to a Token or a Coin? Thanks always for your help. Tom
Sorry, I put one too many t's in there, it is jeton. They were made to use as counters, for calculating. Some may have found there way into circulation like tokens.
