Which would you rather own? 1) A 1914 [a relatively common date] $20 St. Gaudens gold coin (in MS-62), worth ~$1450 http://www.coinfacts.com/double_eagles/saint_gaudens_double_eagles/Double_Eagle_1914_Rev_Trompeter.jpg or 2) A 1909-S VDB Lincoln penny (in MS-60), worth ~$1450? http://www.coinfacts.com/small_cents/lincoln_cents/wheat_ear_cents/1909svdb_cent_rev.jpg And why? :smile
The 1914 $20...It's GOLD! I personally love gold coins. Plus, I'm always worried about cents, being copper and all. I'm a little nervous that I won't do a good job keeping them red (very important you know). I'm not too in to Lincoln cent collecting, but if I were, that would probably be the one I would be going after.
I'd go with the 1909svdb because 10 years from now,it will probably be going for $3000 and the gold piece will be $1700. It's all about the rarity, supply and demand.
1914 $20 because I already have a 1909-S-VDB. But really because its gold man and I dont own any gold.
The 1909-S VDB hands down. First it is the holy grail key date of the Lincoln Series and this coin has gone up far faster than your gold speciman. Highly demanded keys will always outpace all of the other common coins. I purchased a 1909S-VDB years ago in MS63BN (PCGS) condition and I only wish I purchased it earlier. Man, has it go up in price!! It has all of the elements...low mintage, first year issue, highly popular and best yet, collectors DEMAND this coin! Now with gold, gold can go up just on sure market trading for its buillion value alone, but I have to stick with the 09S-VDB. As long as we don;t get hit with another terrorist attack, these coins will always go up!
Niether, I'd rather own this (of course it sold for $26,000). http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/thrace/pantikapaion/BMC_867.jpg Of the two you posted I'd want the S-VDB.
Neither....I don't collect gold and I already have a nice S VDB....but I would love to get my hands on a nice 1951 PF66 Franklin Half Dollar. Speedy
Like Midas has told you, that 1909 cent would be hard to turn down. I personally believe as he said, it will be the best purchase over the long term, whereas the gold will probably rise but not as fast or as high.
Definately the 1909-s VDB. It's a major key date in the Lincoln series. History has shown this one gets more and more out of reach to collectors (from a price perspective) every few years. Not to mention the 100th year anniversary of the LIncoln coming in 2009.
09 SVDB has my vote. Much more sought after coin. I have a lowly VF35 so the one you listed would be a really nice upgrade for me!
choices It would be a tough choice, But I think I would go with the 09 s VDB. It woulb be nice to upgrade the one I have to an ms 60. The gold would look great and easier to explain the cost to others, But it would have to be the humble wheaty.
$20 St. Gaudens gold coin (in MS-62. Which tells you that I am not a collector of "cents" and most likely did not make the "senseable" pick in terms of US coin collecting. But I love the gold and I like that coin. Plus it's bigger!
As already said so many times, the 09S VDB. As to the price as noted you couldn't touch it for that little around here. At coin shows lately that thing is going up faster than the 55DD Lincoln. I already have several but still would like to have a few more. The 14D, 72DD and 22 Plain Lincolns are climbing in price just as much and possibly more. Bet that 09S VDB will be in the $4,000 range in a year or two and maybe sooner. The 2009S maybe VDB will make the 1909 sky rocket in cost.
1909S VDB hands down - I could sell it for top dollar much quicker, and use the money to fill some holes in my Japanese gold collection.
I have to go with the 1909S VDB also. What effect do you think the 1909-S VDB will go up, especially with the 100 year anniversary of the lincoln cent?
The $20, only because I already have the 09svdb (although its only xf-40, but hey I still have one) and only because I would at least like to complete a gold type set.
