To unseal or not to unseal that is the question

I have a large number of coins that come packaged in sealed tight plastic bags OGP. I have all different kinds.. Morgans, Peace dollars etc. The individual plastic they each come in is flimsy and does not fit in a 2x2 box well. I have to fold the edges etc to get the coin in the box otherwise i just have to pile them in a larger box. My question is should i take them out of these sealed holders and place them in air tight hard plastic slabs or just leave them as they are. Which would be better?

The answer kind of depends I guess. Are you sure these sleeves the coins are in now do not contain any PVC ? If they do, then you really need to get them out. And if these plastic sleeves are soft and flexible, then odds are they contain PVC.

As for the hard plastic holders, they have always be my recommendation to collectors. But contrary to what you think, not a single one of them is actually airtight. There is no such thing as an airtight coin holder.

The cellophane holders do not protect coins very well, but coins in them do have a bit more value than an unc. in a 2x2

Hmmm - sounds like the type of packaging that Littleton used to use, (and maybe they still do). If so, you have no worries about PVC. From that point, it's purely a matter of personal preference - yours. But given your question, you obviously would prefer something else. And since you have 2x2 boxes already, the hard plastic 2x2 holders might be a good choice.

The cellophane is not going to provide any protection from "bumps & bruises" and probably nothing to the value either. I really don't think they hold more value just because of the cellophane, and I doubt that it is OGP (Original Government Packaging).

It would be cool to see the morgan in the "OGP" cello. I'm thinking Littleton too.
