I've always been one that liked finding rare coins more than I liked buying them. It was half the fun finding the coins, and was cheaper too. I usually only buy coins when I buy a lot of foreign coins. Right now I want to start collecting bills and hope to find them In circulation (or through the bank). Do you have any tips for finding star notes, red seal, silver certificate, etc? all help would be greatly appreciated

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

Get to know your bank tellers. Every once in a while bringing them a little something to share at coffee break wouldn't hurt either.

    You need access and volume.
The same properties that helped you find rare coins applies to currency.

I would let family and friends know. One of my in-laws worked at a convenience store for a while. She would call me if she came across coins and paper money spent there that I might be interested in. I picked up quite a few silver certificates, red seal US notes, and silver dimes, quarters and half dollars that way. If they know you are looking, family and friends can be a good source (unless they decide to keep them for themselves).

I would be careful about that...tellers accepting things that could be considered a "gift" can get them in trouble.

Trust me man... I found myself in your same situation not but 2 weeks ago. When I found an AWESOME teller thats saves EVERYTHING collectible for me and looks through ALL her cash for me I now find my self in a situation of "Oooohh oooohhh I can't afford to grab all these but I want them soooooo bad". Tread carefully with these bank tellers; they pay off but it can get to be a bit much. If your at all like me, you just HAVE to grab ALL of them. But hey, who am I to complain? I'm runnin down there tomorrow morning to pick up some 2006 $100 star notes I couldn't afford to get last time I was there and see whatelse my teller has in store ;P.

thanks everyone for the replies. I already think I know who I'm going to ask, theres this teller at the bank that seems to always be on duty when I come in and he usually asumes that I want to have my withdraw in coins. I'll ask if he can look out for any star notes or red seal stuff for me. In response to the access and volume, I figure that I can go down to the bank sometimes and withdraw 25-50 in ones and search through those for error/star/etc. let me know what you guys think. Also anyone have any good finds in circulation or from the bank recently?

I need to see my teller sometime soon, but I have been saving some money for the next coin/paper money show on October 1st. I'm getting itchy as she normally has nice $50 and $100 stars for me...

I've never done it but I've heard of quite a few collectors and bill hunters on here and www.wheresgeorge.com/ bringing their bank tellers donuts or other little things for saving collectable coins or currency for them. You bring up a valid concern though so if I were to do that I would probably just ask the branch manager ahead of time if it would be ok to do. Most probably wouldn't have a problem with it but it's that 1% that you have to watch out for.

I've given my teller gift cards around the holidays as a special thank you and she was able to accept those. Just check with the bank manager if you're unsure.

If you have the time and urge, why not get paid to find them. Pick up a part time job at a corner store or something. Doesnt pay much, but adds some extra funding for buying the bills.

i work in a bank and sometimes fill a teller window, and i don't know of any reason a teller would be reprimanded for helping a customer find specific items already in circulation in the teller's drawer. as long as every purchase is made at face value, and the teller doesn't profit from any transaction, it shouldn't be a problem.

and i can't speak for every teller out there, but i know i would surely appreciate the occasional donut or gift from a gracious customer!

don't come to my window though. everything i find, i already keep ;)
