The San Francisco Mint's last production of business strike Half Dollars was in 1954 (Franklin Half). In 1968 the San Francisco mint's coin presses were brought back into action as the presses began striking silver clad proof Kennedy Half Dollars (3,041,506). Three years later (1971) the San Francisco Mint's presses began producing only copper-nickel clad proof Kennedy Half Dollars During the Bicentennial Year, 1976, The S mintmark of San Francisco was affixed to three different Kennedy Half Dollar varieties:

    1. 7,059,099 copper-nickel clad proofs
    2. 11,000,000 silver clad uncirculated specimens
    3. 4,000,000 silver clad proofs

In 1977 San Francisco minted only clad copper-nickel Kennedy proof Half Dollars. This continued through 1991. 1992 began San Francisco's dual proof coin production:

    1. Clad copper-nickel (2,858,981)
    2. Silver (1,317,579)

This dual proof production is still going on. However during 1998 something occurred at the San Francisco Mint that produced a third variety.

    1. Usual Clad copper-nickel (2,086,507)
    3. Usual Silver glossy (unknown)
    4. Unusual Silver matte (unknown)
    (Silver Glossy & Matte total = 878,792)

The San Francisco presses were put back into production in 1965 put no mintmark appeared on their coins because the coinage act of 1965 had ordered the removal of all mintmarks for a period of five years. (they were restored two years early) During those three years the San Francisco mint presses struck 1.417 billion cents, 120.8 million nickels, 179 million dimes, 126.5 million quarters, and 754,000 half dollars all for circulation.

The 878,792 mintage figure is for the "glossy" silver proof only. The mintage for the silver matte proof was 99,020.
