I recently aquired this coin from an estate auction, and am interested to know if I overpaid for it. I would like any opinions on grade, quality, and value. Thank you kindly.
Scans can strip the luster of a coin pretty quickly, but if it looks like that in hand, I'd have some doubts about it's authenticity. I am in no way, shape, or form an expert on Early American Coinage, though, my focus starts in the 1880's and up.
It looks to me like O-112 which Overton calls R3 201-500 pieces known. I'm thinking XF. It does look like the scans sucked the life out of the coin, but it looks like honest wear to me. I am new to this series, so don't take any of this as gospel.
Found this on Heritage 1828 O-112 But judging by this coin, I may have overgraded yours. It sold for $230.
Well, I don't think you got hosed, but probably wasn't a killer deal either. The coin looks pretty nice and is at least in XF condition. I have seen worse in AU 50 and 53 holders but more than likely it would grade XF. It it had some luster on it, it could easily go AU. If you are feeling lucky, submit it, and if it comes back AU, you have a $400 coin. As someone else has stated it is a O-112 which is an R3 so that is a big plus. Also, because of the many varieties, people like to collect the '28s. So in summary, $220 I think would be a good price if it were slabbed, but is a smidge high being raw. Mike
