I can't get good shots of this coin with a small cell camera but it is a really clean coin even close..
I was just going to ask you if the photos were scans because the luster seems awfully flat. I think it has been dipped a bit too much. Chris
I am hoping it wasn't dipped, at least from my perspective it doesn't appear as such...Perhaps I can get a better photo...
Doesn't appear overdipped, notice how the eagle is frosty as well as liberty's hair. If she was overdipped there wouldn't be any frost. Definitely market acceptable.
I'm still learning how to grade different items and sometimes what I think it either acceptable or not is way different than the grading standard..There are a lot of folks here that can spot problems WAY better than I...
wonder why someone would possibly overdip this considering how clean the fields are.. well that might just bite... I will still try to get some better shots of it.. any good threads on photos? I'm stuck with a 4meg camera phone...
I am by no means any kind of expert, but I don't see where you guys are saying it is dipped? To me it looks like a 64+ coin. Will somebody explain the dipping thing.
This coin would be attributed as an altered surface coin by PCGS, and it does appear to be dipped. It was dipped in a jewelry cleaner and that strips the orginal and frosty surface of the coin. It's a nice coin but would be nothing more than Genuine because of the missing original surface.
Coin doesn't appear dipped in any way. Reverse has booming luster 1880 S is well known for PL and DMPL, scanning typically doesn't catch frost or luster so IMO not dipped. Solid 64 possible 65
This still doesn't make the coin orginal, and it's not PL either. The bust and eagle are reflecting too much light and this is caused by the surface being stripped down. FYI dipping doesn't take away luster, and I send Morgan Dollars to PCGS all the time. If it's what you think then send it off and we can settle it easier.
I am going to try some other photos later this morning and see what happens.. I just don't know now what to think and it isn't really worth sending for grade as it is...
I can see why people would say it was over-dipped, or even polished, the pics do make it look that way (and it could be). But, I don't think the pics are good enough to give an accurate grade. I'm not very good at taking pics, and I've taken plenty of pics of PCGS/NGC MS Morgans that look just like those pics (I think most that looked like that were under natural light, or really poor lighting angles). Reading some of the articles here might help with the pics (especially the tips on lighting, which, imo, is the biggest factor): Coin Photography by Mark Goodman
