I dug this 1916 mercury dime this evening. I'm saying it's an "S" ... but from certain angles my mind will start playing tricks on me. I need an honest, professional opinion ... This is my 3rd '16 that I have found ... damn near gave me a heart attack each time. Thanks ..
Nice find. I cannot tell you how many 16s's I have seen in 16d holders in albums I have bought over the years. There is always the temptation to see a D. I see an S as well.
Hmmm, based on those extra magnified images I am going to say a "D" after all. The tips of the mint mark looked more "S" shaped in the initial image. Well done~~
Thanks for the input guys. Would'nt that be something ? Does anyone have some advice on where I could get it looked at to be absolutely sure? Any reputable collectors or dealers I could send it to ? I would'nt be disappointed if it ended up being an S, but I'd like to know for sure either way. Thanks ..
Looks like a D to me and looks to be in the right spot too. Awesome! If it were my coin, I'd send it to NCS for conservation and get the coin into an NGC details holder... not sure how well they can clean it up, but there appears to be some decent detail on the coin under the layers of earth.
I thought for sure it was an S at first. But on the super close up it clearly looks like a D. I wish I could see it in hand, because I have good eyes and I think I could tell you for sure if I looked at it under a loupe. If you took it to a coin show you could probably get a few second opinions from dealers. And then send it in for conservation and slabbing.
I'm gonna say it is an "S' and the reason why is the if it were a D you would have a straight line down the left side. Instead you see the left open curve of the S
The D on an authentic 1916 D mercury dime has tails coming off the back, very similar to this one. It looks like a D to me as well, but the shape is a bit odd. May be just the earth grime. If you haven't already, definitely weigh it. Then I would do like suggested above and take it to a show and get some opinions in hand or send it to NCS. Great find
I wouldn't bet on it being either, although it's obviously one or the other. The condition and pictures make it impossible to go one way or the other for sure. Have it looked at in-hand by an expert and hope for the best.
