Hey gang! Got this from a family member the other day and have absolutely no idea as to its rarity, grade, and worth. Any input would be much appreciated!
I'm not sure I am following you coinlover, I thought this was a community that welcomed newcomers looking to learn, but clearly you would prefer to just make fun of the new guy...
Nice note! Some of the others here in the Paper Forum will be able to give you an idea of what it's worth. There are "others" you'll just have to ignore. Be patient. This note is not in good shape. Check the completed listings on ebay to get an idea of what some others have sold for. Either way it would be a nice note to begin a collection with.
Ok, DLeach, welcome to CT! But to give you some help: you are showing a 1914 $20 Federal Reserve Note. I simply googled that (1914 $20 Federal Reserve Note) and saw the second one down said "Large Size Note Values - Old Currency Valueswww.oldcurrencyvalues.com/largesize.html 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Note - Extremely Common. Various. Various. $40 ..... 1914 $20 Federal Reserve Note - Extremely Common. Various. Various ..." going into that site and scrolling down, it give information on the values of that bill if in not so great condition and in really good condition..... hope this helps!
Thanks for the idea on checking completed ebay listings Moonshine! I found about 4 completed listings that ranged about $60 to $90, but all of the notes looked to be in a little better condition than mine.
Thank Kasia, I thought about just doing an internet search as well, but thought the forum members might have a good idea of the grade first, once I know the grade, I can just do an internet search for the price.
A very common issue for the period and the condition is very rough, grade would Approach filler status meaning there,s not that much value over face if any It would all depend how bad someone would want it, i,am not sure that the line Would be that long.
Welcome to Coin Talk Dleach. You have a Fr.983A 1914 $20 Richmond FRN. Condition is good at best, but one of my favorites as far as engravings on the back of the note. With all of the popular forms of transportation shown....Steam Ship, Locomotive, Car, Bi-Plane, Tug Boat, and New York City and the Statue of Liberty in the background. Receiving it from a family member makes it even better. Maybe you could ask for some provenance concerning the note. It's not rare, and it's real worth may be a great story attached with it.
Welcome to the forum DLeach. Your note is a 1914 Federal reserve Note from Richmond district, Fr# 983a (as Steve said) and is the "a" variety due to having an upper case district letter at the lower left of the note. This note would grade in "good" condition, but that is better than "fair". Book value is $215 in Fine condition, so in its current state, I would estimate the value of this particular note to be in the $100 range.
EBay realized I would estimate in the area of $60 on the high end. I concur in it being the favorite of the 1914 series. They also made a $5, $10, $50, and $100. If you ever watched Boardwalk Empire on HBO these get tossed around regularly.
GROVER ROCKS! That bad boy Vetoed every bill passed before him. He was also the only President to serve two terms that were not consecutive. We ask about the Grover Pres Dollar when I did the Denver mint tour last year, and yes they are going to make two separate coins for him. At least that's what the tour guy said?
Looks like it:
2012 21 Chester A. Arthur 1881-1885 22 Grover Cleveland 1885-1889 23 Benjamin Harrison 1889-1893 24 Grover Cleveland 1893-1897
