What is largest possible amount of money in currently minted and circulating U.S. coins can you have without being able to make change for a dollar?
Technically an infinate ammount (up to the total number of one dollar coins minted). I could have a billion one dollar coins and never be able to make "change" for a dollar
Actually it would be $1.19. I guess you could have four dimes and still not be able to make change for a buck.
Race Official Winner! Ziggy, your thought about the $1 coin was interesting. I guess it depends what the definition of make change is.
Not to mention that not too many want them in change for purchases made with $20 bills either. So, the dollar coin is my answer!
Wiki considers the dollar coin as a way to make change for a dollar http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_ways_to_make_change_for_a_dollar [h=2]Indisputable Tally of Combinations[/h] 1 dollar coin 2 half dollars 1 HD 2Q ... However I can see how some might balk at that.
Thanks for the brainteaser Winged Lib! Does this mean I win one of your supremely awesome toned coins!?!
$1.69 3 quarters(Q) 9dimes(D) and 4 pennies (P). 3Q= $.75 9D=$.90 4P=$.04 And because there isn't an extra penny, this is the highest amount of change you can have without getting back change.
Now how many different ways can you have a $1.19 and not make change for a dollar? And no I do not know the answer, but could think of 3 ways right off the bat. (1) Races answer of 3 quarters, 4 dimes and 4 cents. (2) 1 half dollar, 1 quarter, 4 dimes and 4 cents (3) 1 quarter, 9 dimes and 4 cents Any others that you can think of?
That would have been a good idea! No, too bad, I was just curious how smart CT people were! You are clearly the genius amongst us.
Just kidding of course. You spend too much on those things to be giving them away! Thanks again for the contest. It was a pleasure to play.
If you make it a half dollar, one quarter, four dimes and four cent then you have $1.19, but you can't make change for anything (nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar, or dollar.)
