This coin belongs to my mother and she would like an estimate of it's worth. I know nothing about coins so I may not even have the correct name of the coin. Appears to be 1820 struck over 1819. Pics below. Thanks in advance. Rob
Yes, it looks like an 1820/19 Curl Base "2", which is a little bit more desirable than the Square Base "2" struck within the same year. The coin looks to have, IMO, "G-details". The deep scratches on the obverse hurt the overall price, but other than that, the coin looks to have original surfaces. I'd say, to the right person, the coin's worth $60-$70 Nice coin! -Brian
That was fast!! Thank you for the info. I have no idea if it has been cleaned but she will be happy to know it's estimated value.
Looks like a 1820/19. O-102 to me, but I am new to attributing these. Maybe Good or VG details on the grade, because of the big scratch on the obverse. As far as price I'm sure someone will have an idea.
yes it is indeed an O-102, R2 Coin. Graded in the G6 range with details for the scratch. I would say this is a $50 coin retail.
Pretty simple Overton to decipher, given that there's exactly one overdate with a curled base 2. BubbaRob, tell Mom to save it as a keepsake and not sell it for a lousy $50. It's a very neat Capped Bust Half with a lot of history behind it. Read a little about them, and their importance to banking and commerce during the country's youth. It's fascinating stuff and holding that coin in your hand will give you a real attachment. Lance.
Agreed. Mid-grade Barber, Seated, and Capped Bust halves command CRAZY premiums on eBay... I recently saw a Seated Half that was PCGS certified XF40 (or 45... Can't remember) go for DOUBLE what PCGS Priceguide lists it for... And the I always thought the Priceguide's prices were a bit high ! I believe it's because those Registry guys need certain coins in certain grades and they'll pay through-the-roof for that ONE COIN they're looking for. -Brian
I actually can grab seated and barber halves fairly easily with my sniping (I go after ones with horrible pictures and horrible end times), but barber halves in AU go for pretty high prices even if cleaned. One time, I accidentally listed an AU lightly polished for 7 AM instead of 7 PM and I still got $180 for it (and to think, it may have been $240 if it had been 7 PM). I'm only talking about raw coins though....slabbed coins do go for pretty high prices regardless like you say. For double PCGS price guide, it may have been a rare variety that wasn't described.
