There aren't many interesting coins left in circulation because of all the people cherrypicking and doing roll searches. The current state of coin collecting has become either slug collecting or buying coins from the secondary market. Proof and mint sets are a mockery of true coin collecting, There is nothing like having a pocket full of silver and hearing the jingle and handling the coins. They have became so valuable that we can't even touch them anymore for fear of them losing value. I have found some silver in circulation, but those finds are quite rare. It is a sad state of affairs now because I get excited to see a wheat cent in circulation. I work as a cashier and I see a lot of money change hands. I have only found about 7 or 8 silver coins in the past year, the average person probably never sees them.
Recent silver finds for me include a 1961 Dime from the CoinStar plus a 1944 Quarter & 1934 Dime with my Detector.
I used to use canadian quarters at the vending machine at my school : ), I didn't feel too bad about it though, as the school charged 1.50 for a candy bar, but that still doesnt make it right. Oh btw, this was about 10 years ago
Gee, and I thought todays vending machine prices were high, but at the vending machine at the local university, you can put in a dollar and get a Susan B. or a Sacajewea in return. I found about 20 1999 Susan B's that were very nice. They looked to me like they were almost BU.
One freind of mine has a small vending machine company. It dispenses items like candy, chips, etc. He is also a coin collector and does get Silver coins from time to time. His machines do take Silver coins. I've never heard of a vending machine that will not take Silver but I guess that is possible. I checked with that friend of mine with the vending machine company and he never heard of machines rejecting Silver either. So just for the fun of it I took a well worn, beat up Silver Dime and tried it in a vending machine and guess what. It was accepted.
