    Hi everyone,
I really need some help.. and I would be so grateful for an experts view:
I have a 1917 Gold Sovereign Sydney Mint... i inherited this from my mum when she passed away 15 years ago, and she inherited it from her mum. The problem is, the measurements..... the thickness is 2.4mm and the diameter 22.4mm the weight is 8gms. I know these are not the regular measurements as I have checked on wikipedia.

However, I have been to 3 jewellers who inform me that the gold is 22 carat, they are certain it is not a fake, but - no-one can understand the way off measurements. Maybe it is special??!! I just don't know.. maybe there were a few made that were wrong?

If anyone could shed any light on this I would be so grateful.
    Many Thanks everyone
    Tina

The weight and diameter sound about right but the thickness is way off ... thickness should be 1.52 mm. So something is off somewhere. If it's 50% too thick and weighs the correct 8 gm it can't be 22 carat. Etc. Time for pictures!

According to Michael A. Marsh's The Gold Sovereign, Golden Jubilee edition (published in 2002 obviously; Marsh died in 2006 but his work is still a standard reference) there were 1.666 million produced and he ranks it a common date, although the possibility of later meltings is always present.

The thickness could easily be off that much if you measured in the wrong place.
