I have about 1000 medals, and storage and display has always been a problem. I'm currently working on a solution, and it's a work-in-progress. I'm going to use a map chest (photo attached). It has 11 drawers that are about 2" deep. My plan is to use an inert foam pad covered with velvet cloth for the lining of each drawer. On top of the lining in each drawer, I want to insert a (PVC free) plastic grid so that compartments are formed for each medal. The size of the grid will vary for each drawer depending on the size of the medals that go into each drawer. For medals under 45mm, a 2" x 2" or 3"x3" grid will suffice. For larger medals to about 90mm, a 4"x4" grid will suffice. The inside dimension of each drawer is 37-1/4" w x 15-1/2" d. From a sheet of 3/16" thick plastic, the grid is constructed by cutting strips 37" l x 2" w and 15" l x 2" w. 1" slots will be cut into the width of each strip at 2", 3" or 4" intervals so that all of the strips for each drawer will interlock. These interlocking strips will not be glued so that they can be deconstructed easily. Of course, all of the compartments along the perimeter of each drawer would be missing the (outer) fourth side. To fully enclose each compartment, four additional strips (2 - 37" & 2 - 15") with mortise and tenon ends will be needed to fully complete the grid. When completed, this map chest will be capable of displaying 1000+ medals. Chris
Nice one Chris!!!:thumb: Here one I put 4 of my metal's in. if you have a office/man cave & have wall room.this works great too. but there $27.00 &S/P too. :kewl: http://www.coinworld.com/dealers/am...parent-display-frame-12-7-32-x-2-3-8-x-63-64/
No! It's has a tongue and groove design. So, you defintely wouldn't want to use something like this in a damp or humid environment because the wood will swell. Chris
wow, great idea, my neighbor has a huge one of these, it's probably double the size of that one, he keeps guns in it but he said he'd sell it to me, i might buy it and do this with it, i think that would be cool. but his drawers are bigger than those on that, so i'd make a fold out dresser drawer(ex. below) so i can put twice as many coins in one drawer. (like this)
Miz, It's not a good idea to store coins anywhere that guns had been stored. The oils and solvents are not good for coins. Even if it may seem to be clean, there will always be molecules of these chemicals in the air. Chris

That is a really nice looking map cabinet. Do you plan to keep each medal in some type of air-tight holder? Of course, the wood & materials & adhesives you use could out-gas resulting in unwanted affects to your medals. Wouldn't it be nice to have an carved silver medal holder for each of your medals like the one depicted in http://www.cointalk.com/t192869-2/ post #26?
That's awesome. any chance you can post a pic or two when it's done please? Alos thanks for the heads up about the guns and coins.
