Saw a borderline one for sale today, '81-S, would probably grade 63, is borderline DMPL, but toning and some haze obscure the mirrors enough for me not to be able to tell. I should assume it'll be available for the forseeable future. At a price tag of $48 (I offered him $40, then $45 (just to see if he was budging) and it was a no go), it's a very tempting buy. My question is this; will a quick dip damage the mirrors on a DMPL Morgan substantially enough to remove the possibility of it attaining said DMPL designation? I'd prefer an answer with someone who has experience with dipping Morgans like that.
There are also plenty of PL and DMPL coins that look much worse after a dip. Some toning is deceiving and hard as heck to see through. You might end up with a PL AU coin in the end.
Dipping a coin is always a risk because you never know for sure what you'll end up with. There are more than a few stories out there of dealers taking a solid 5 figure coin, dipping it, and turning it into a 6 figure coin. Conversely there are just as many stories of that 5 figure coin being turned into a 4 figure coin.
well in Au its worth like $37 or so, so you would be losing $11, if it goes really bad melt is $34 so you would be losing $14. Not that big of a gamble.
i have dipped a few coins of course they dont stay in my collection after that no matter how well they turn out.
If this works well and reveals a dmpl coin, it'll probably be slabbed and sold. Or maybe I'll hold onto it since it would only be running me $80 total.
Why don't you post before and after photo, I have some stained coins, not sure if I should send to NCS or try to dip on my own.
There are too many variables to answer that question. First of all you have the coin itself - not all of them are good candidates for dipping. Then you have the person doing it - they can experienced or inexperienced. Then you have the many different brands of coin dips - while all similar, they all react differently. Bottom line, it's always a risk to dip a coin. But if it is done properly it is perfectly acceptable.
i forgot to tell you i have discovered a new natural way to tone coins using different kinds of plastic you can get different colors. isnt that amazing. also there is a special plastic for rainbow toning
I have a special plastic coffin for people who disseminate information like this. That's so everyone can laugh at the jerk. (.dedulcxe ynapmoc tneserP) Chris
so you have plastic coffins for stuffing people? why dont you go and lie down in it yourself? i doubt people will find it a laughing matter
Just throwing my 2 cents in here. I am new to coin collecting and by new ive been at it for about 7 years so yeah I am rather new at it in comparasion to most here. GD knows most about these things and is a great source for information, another person you can talk to regarding conserving coins is BadThad.
