I have recently become interested in collating coins. I am thinking to keep my interest, I am going to keep my collection to coins are interesting in one way or another to me. Duh! Right now, I have a few Silver Eagles, and one 1880 Morgan. I think the coins that peak my intreats eight now are the Silver Eagles, Morgan Dolllars, Indian Head with Buffalo nickels, and the steal penny. I have a fairly limited budget. I will be looking to add the a Indian nickel or two, and a steel penny or two soon. I am looking on eBay for a few coins. I am familiar with the workings of eBay, but I have never bought coins form eBay. I plan to only go with sellers that have thousands of positive feedback. Aside from the obvious with eBay, is there anything I should be aware of? Also any tips or info with my collecting ideas would be appreciated as well. Thanks!
Welcome to the neighborhood! Don't buy raw (uncertified) coins on eBay from ANY seller unless you know them. It doesn't matter what their feedback score may be. There are just as many sellers with thousands of feed back who sell problem coins. Also, don't believe any seller who claims that his/her coins are "unsearched". It's a gimmick just to part you with your money. Knowledge is power! Chris
I agree with cpm9ball, I used to sell wheat penny rolls on ebay and a couple years back I decided to list some of the rolls and unsearched, and on average they sold 2-3 bucks higher. maybe I'll sell a couple rolls and see if the markets changed :/
If it were me, looking on eBay for a roll of steel pennies, I wouldn't pay over $3. Just did a search, and most of what I found was ridiculously priced. One clown actually thinks his roll is worth $50.
If you are looking to buy some coins, why not just put an add in the wanted section here on cointalk? You will probably get more friendliness and better prices here than you would one ebay.
Welcome to cointalk. If you are going to collect, even a limited budget, you might want to get some books first. At least the redbook, maybe a book on buffalo nickels or one on Lincolns. And even the cherry pickers guide. I know it is tough to start with books, rather that buying - but they will help in the long run. The same with reading some of the threads on this site.
Buy the book before the coin. If you do that, you'll be overpaying for most of your coins. Paying for the holder not the coin. I've had no problems so far buying raw coins on eBay. Just be careful who you buy from.
