Below is the latest ancient I have acquired. Its pretty much a upgrade to another Maesa I had owned. Just a younger bust & much better details. Julia Maesa (218 - 225 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IVLIA MAESA AVG Draped bust right. R: IVNO Juno standing facing, head left, holding scepter and patera. RIC 254 RSC 016 3.3g 20mm
Nice coin. Nice piece of history. She is one of the forgotten "powerbrokers" in Roman history. She was a strong willed woman. I wouldn't want to get on her wrong side. Just ask Mr. Macrinus. guy
Very young and a nice coin. There is a lot of variety available in her portraits considering how short of time she was around.
That is a nice coin with an expressive portrait of Maesa. We visited today a fort on the Limes which had been dedicated by the Cohort manning it in the 1st and 2nd century a.d to Julia Maesa's daughter, Julia Mamaea. An dedicatory inscription was found there to Mamaea's praising her as "Mother of the Army. She seems to have inherited her mother's strong character.
Lol, it wasnt a deposit, just something really sticky that cleaned right up & the toning is in-tact. Cool story Eduard. Would love to see stuff like that someday. Probably makes coins come more alive.
Having a teenage grandson with Elagabalus' personality usually makes it hard to be either nice or cute.
I've frequently used this diagram to "keep the players" straight in my simple mind : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severan_dynasty_family_tree guy
