We don't often discuss the grading of Roosevelts here on CoinTalk, so here's your opportunity to get some practice in and discuss the finer points of grading the Roosevelt Dime. This coin is graded by PCGS. I'm interested in what you think the grade of the coin is, not what you think PCGS put on the slab, but you can put that down if you'd like to as well. To me, Roosevelt Dimes are somewhat difficult to grade...partially due to their size. If you'd like to mention why you've graded it the way you have, feel free. If you believe that a particular feature of this coin has taken the grade one way or the other, mention that too.
I'm going to hazard a ms-65, after looking at the bottom band especially more carefully I am going to eliminate the possibility of FB.
That's a beautiful coin and probably from a mint set. I suspect it graded MS-66 and I agree. Even though it has attributes of a higher grade coin the obverse rim damage and strike weakness on the reverse holds it back. It is extremely clean for the issue so some people would be inclined to grade it higher. It doesn't appear to be FB but it's tough to tell from the picture. The mintage of this coin in same or higher condition was probably less than about a million and the vast majority were lost or degraded in circulation.
I'd go along with the 66. As for the FB designation, much would depend on when it was graded since they didn't use it until about 18 months ago. But if the line in the bottom band goes all the way ( it may be glare in the pic that cuts off the edge ) PCGS would give it IMO.
I would say MS66 also....the coin seems clear of marks and nicks....the strike is good and sharp. Speedy
I don't collect dimes as I only have one dime in my collection...a PCGS MS68 1996-W, but I have to go with MS67. I can't see from the photos any detracting marks or nicks. Yep...a nice MS67
Thanks for all of your opinions so far. Keep them coming! What do you all make of the two rim nicks by the BER in LIBERTY on the obverse? How much of a role do those play in determining the grade of this coin? In your opinion, if it didn't have those, would it be an MS67?
IMO no, the reverse strike quality is not strong enough for a 67. That and the rim nicks are about the only detractions the coin has. But even if the strike were stronger, I think the nicks would hold it back.
