I went to the local coin club meeting last night and picked up a few things I would like to show. This is a lovely toned 1972 Canadian Dollar, came in a nice black leather like case, and has original foam and lined. The toning is NT, as the seller, and old friend (86) bought it originally white. I was lucky in that no other bidder wanted a toned one. Jim
Jim I like that coin quite a bit. I've seen several toned Canadian Dollars, but the design doesn't really do a whole lot for me, and I've passed on them. Must've been cool for your friend to buy it white and have it end up like this! How was it stored and how long ago did he buy it?
He bought it in 1973 or 74 from a Canadian "Snowbird" who was a collector and brought coins down with him to trade for Mexican coins. It was stored in the leather like padded box and cardboard box, and probably only opened a couple of times. He is trying to sell off as much minor stuff as possible so his son will not be overwhelmed. Jim
I can see myself paying the same amount give or take a few bucks. I recently saw a nice Canadian Dollar that was from 72, I believe, it was orange toned, looked PL from what I remember. It was in a lot of coins for around or less than $20, I can't remember. There was also a really nice proof one, if I remember correctly, on eBay, but it was really expensive lol
It is only 50% silver, but there were only 342,000 minted. Got some other stuff also, but I will put it up when I get some photo time Jim
Yes I've seen some real beauties come out of those little leatherette metal boxes. I think the trick to such nice toning is the foam pad in the box, but that's just a guess. nice find!
