I just found a 1886 Liberty nickel in with what I thought was "junk" coins. After doing some searching I think differently about this coin. It has what I think NGC would classify as "environmental damage", but upon closer inspection the coin looks to be in decent shape. I would like to get ya'lls opinions on whether or not you think that this coin would be worthy of sending to NCS and then to NGC? Please let me hear it. Thanks.
Don't send it to NCS. If you collect V nickels, then keep it and add it to your collection. If you don't have any interest in it; then put it on ebay as is and let someone add it to their collection. Any money you receive from it; put it towards a nice coin that you've been wanting for awhile. BTW, nice score! -LTB
The way I see special coins is that you don't run into those special coins every day.. It's rare and doesn't happen often at all, hence why it's special. If it were me I would hang onto it for bragging rights
Maybe it came into contact with clay soil? Very different, I'd hold into it. I doubt there is much that can be done conservation-wise but I could be wrong. With the details in the devices in such great condition I would definitely keep it as a conservation piece-until you get more info at least!
First...I don't think this is a metal detector find. The "toning" would be much heavier on the up side (towards the sky) due to rain etc. I think this coin was just badly stored for a long time and then used as a pocket piece to create some wear. Still very nice. Second...I propose a third option to your poll which is: Send it to me!!!!!! Joe
I also do not think it was a dug coin. You run across these from time to time on v nickels. I don't know why, but it happens on these. No sense to send to NCS, they could not help this. Either keep it or sell, but it will not grade and NCS cannot help. Anyone know what this "red toning" that appears fairly frequently on v nickels? I have always been curious. Chris
+1. This kind of environmental damage is common on Liberty (and shield) nickels, although this coin appears to have it heavier than most. Nevertheless, this is a good date and will find a buyer. F-VF details, heavy environmental damage IMO.
Sweet find! I personally don't see a point of sending that in unless you plan on selling it. If you want to prove its authenticity then it's worth it.
Thanks people and keep the comments coming. I personally don't think it's a dug coin as well. My Grandmother gave me a boatload of coins 11 years ago and this was with them. It was in a little butter or something container with a bunch of IHs, wheats and other v nickels. I know she had to have had them for at least 40 years. I am not a nickel collector so that is why I was wondering about sending it off to NCS then NGC. I am just glad that I decided to check all of the coins in the container before I got rid of them.
