I have a sheet of banknotes from the "Bank of the Valley" Winchester Virginia. They are only printed on one side, and contain 4 notes each, three $1.00 and one $2.00. My guess is that they were bearer bonds and printed this way so they would be in $5.00 sheets. Does anyone have knowledge of this note, and what would an approximate value of these sheets be ? Thanks !
I can't give you any information on this particular issue but the printing method is common for obsolete notes and has nothing to do with them being issued as bonds. Some obsolete sheets may have a single denomination, some may be set up as 2x$1.00 and 2X$2.00. It all depended on what the bank asked for.
Nice sheet of obsolete notes.. I'm sure someone will chime in and be able to say more about it...It was not issued as it isn't signed but, the whole sheet probably carries a premium of some kind since it is complete. Condition is important as well.
As previous posts have stated, these are called obsolete bank notes or broken bank note. Considering the imprints of bank note printers, I would place the date of these sheets at 1839-40. These are pretty good notes and the sheets look to be in nice condition -- I found the singles listed here, towards the bottom: http://www.aocurrency.com/VIRGINIA.HTM
The notes listed on that link are priced a little high for what they are. You have a nice sheet but unfortunately there are decent amounts out there. I have owned two. Your notes are called “remainders”, which means they were never signed and are left over stock. Most uncut sheets are remainders as well as thousands of cut notes. If your notes were already signed and remained uncut, you would have a valuable sheet. Your sheet, unfortunately would actually sell for more if it was cut up. I am NOT suggesting you do this, mostly because I am partial to uncut sheets but there simply is not a lot of demand for uncut obsolete sheets. Heritage just sold (in the last 6 months or so) two sheets just like yours for $195.00 each. I would say these prices would be closer to wholesale value and retail of your sheet would be close to $225-$275 depending on the condition. I sold mine for $235 about a year ago.
gsalexan and jhinton Thanks again for some great information. It is interesting learning the history of these. The guy that owns them was getting ready to throw them away, and I told him to hold off, they might be worth keeping. Glad he followed my advice.
