An excerpt from the North American Coins & Prices - A Guide to U.S., Canadian and Mexican Coins states:

"Glory: A heraldic term for stars, or other devices placed as if in the sky or luminous."

Several articles have been written about coins and the artistic devices designers use to create Glory on a coin. Even I posted a trivia article in the past. This time let's look at some of the newer U.S. coins exhibiting Glory on one or both sides.

Out first Glory coin was struck in 2004 honoring Thomas Edison and uses a unique way to show the radiance of the light bulb featured on its reverse:

This 2006 Benjamin Franklin Commemorative uses a setting sun radiating long rays from its under side to represent Glory on the coin's reverse:

Our final $1 commemorative coin (American Bald Eagle) was minted in 2008 and uses a full radiating sun as the Glory devise on its reverse:

The silver American Eagle bullion coins (1986 to date) feature a rising sun emanating its rays from about an 8:00 position on their obverses:

The gold American Eagle bullion coins (1986 to date) feature a Sunburst as the Glory device with the Sun's rays radiating upward behind the standing Liberty on the coin's obverse:

You've already seen the Platinum Eagle bullion coins produced since 1997 in 1 ounce and its fractional counterparts of 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 ounce amounts. You know the mints have used the same designs on both sides of the coins right up to this year. To refresh your recollection here's photos of a 2002:

The MMIX (2009) Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins exhibit Glory as a radiant Sun on both of their sides:

Correction to above: the Vatican coin with the dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit.
