    Hello everyone! My name is Easton, I'm 19, and I love collecting pennies! I have been a long time lurker of these forums but never created an account until today to post some pictures of this 1909 VDB penny I recently found about a week ago, I coin collect with my grandparents and when I found this they told me that it looked really nice so I figured I would post it here and see what all of you have to say about it.

    Thanks! :smile

    @joey0053 - Yeah I'm proud of it though! Thanks :)

    @New Gen. Nick - I was going through some 'unsearched' penny rolls that I had gotten off of ebay, I had ordered something like 150 wheats, none of the others were nearly as good, this one was actually the very last one I picked up, it was covered in dirt and I couldn't see the V.D.B on it till I had rubbed some water over it, it's actually really shiny and has a good color to it, I'm not sure why it didn't show in the pictures but oh well haha.

    @dsmith23 - Thanks! :thumb:

    Welcome to CT!

    Unfortunately, your VDB has been cleaned, it is worth about $5 or so. Since there's no such thing as "unsearched wheats", especially on ebay, these are typical seed coins placed in over-priced rolls by shady sellers. Usually the scam seller will put one of these on the end of the roll with the reverse out with the line "possible SVDB on the end". This is nothing but a trick to try to convince people to way over-bid on a roll of junk.

    Here's a good rule of thumb for you....

    Common wheats typically retail for 5 cents each. Anytime you are asked to pay more than that (including shipping) for "unsearched wheats" walk away. There's load of sellers on ebay selling nothing but crap rolls they put together with intriguing end coins. It's nothing more than a scam.

    I don't mind the risk every once in awhile, I'm very pleased with this being the first V.D.B. I've found so I'm not complaining, thank you for the reply! :)

    There's a difference between risk and just throwing your money away young man. I have no idea how many wheats you got or what you paid for your lot, but for $30 you could have bought yourself a nice, mint state VDB. Don't feel bad, buying those coins on ebay is a common mistake. Believe me, us older guys have made plenty of mistakes. My goal as an older collector is to educate the new and/or young collectors to keep them from making similar costly mistakes. :)

    Well that's one more reason to add to the list of why I like these forums then! It makes me happy to hear that there are people on this forum that do care and are willing to help :) And the reason I'm not to worried about the risk is because it was like 150 wheat pennies for like $10 haha so it wasn't too much of a money pit but I will make sure to not make the same mistake twice. Thank you! :)

    Hey, I think it was a nice find, where else can you find old coins like this except in these kind of deals. I found one when I was a kid, of course that was in the mid '50's and they were really hard to find then. I get a kick looking through dealers junk boxes of foreign coins. Keep it up and enjoy!

    Good lookin' coin! Too bad about the cleaning and rim dings... Either way, it's a great addition to ANY collection. :) Nice find!

    Thanks! And yeah I guess the way I see it is that no matter what has happened to the coin it just adds a little more history on to it. :)

    Welcome to the forum and BadThad is right. Those unsearched lots are a bad idea.
    And you could have in fact gotten a nice MS one for less than $30. Got this sucker for $24 bucks off the 'bay.

    There are such things as unsearched wheat penny rolls!!
    :welcome:to CT also
    On Saturday i went to a small bargin store with a coin sign on its window.Went in and saw wheat penny rolls in a glass case. They were only .80 cents each.He said they were unsearched but i had my doubts. This were the cheapest and the best rolls i ever had.EVERY coin in them was before 1939. 2x1909 vdb 15x1918 30xteens 40xtwenties 50xthirties and one more thing two ancient Roman coins that date back to 306-336.I almost had a heart attach.100 dollars worth of wheats in five rolls for four dollars.
