Hello, I've never sold a coin before and I would like to know the best option for selling a coin for someone who knows nothing about it. Should I get it professionally graded before selling? I need some money for something and I would like to get the most I can for the 2 coins I want to sell. Ebay makes me a little nervous since I have no experience with it. Any suggestions?
Show us pics, so you get a ballpark of value, then take it to the stealer, um... I mean dealer, and see if he is in that ballpark.
Like the other replies said, a lot depends on the ballpark value. If the coin is likely worth $300 or more, it is a reasonable candidate for professional grading. Lower than that, and the considerable time and money needed to get a coin graded may not be worth it. For lower value coins, a local dealer, or coin club auction, or local show might be more time efficient. What is the date, mintmark and denomination? A photo might be very helpful for some coins. Heritage has a very quick list of approximate values depending on the date of the coin, plus a list of the more valuable dates. http://coins.ha.com/ref/beginners-price-guide.zx
It's 2 wheat pennies, 1931-S and 1909-S. Judging by what I've seen on basic grading pics online, they look like F to XF. Is it even worth my time selling them or should I just hold on to them? I posted pics a while back when I first found them in my dad's collection. You might be able to search my posts to take a look. I don't have a great cam to get any good pics right now.
Put them on a flatbed scanner. Usually better results than a camera anyway. The 09-s doesn't have the "VDB" on the reverse?
