Do you think my Mercury Dime has a shot at a Green CAC sticker?

    Your 1921D is really nice.

That is a really nice coin & you must be very happy to have it in your collection! It is far nicer than the MS62 FSB I purchased (& posted here) back in June of 2010.

Edit: I almost forgot to say Yes, I think your coin could get a CAC green sticker if you want one.

I am usually willing to go as high as 30-40% of the difference between grades for a + graded coin. That's just my personal set arbitrary line for + graded coins. For example, for a coin worth $250 in MS66 and $800 in MS67, I would roughly pay about 30% of (800-250) of a premium for an MS66+ coin -- roughly $170 over MS66 or $420 total. That's kind of my "upper limit" in my head when bidding. That doesn't mean I'd win the coin though. ;)

But, for ★ coins, people really do go crazy sometimes. I have seen MS63★ coins go for as much as MS65 or MS66 coins without the ★ designation. Sometimes even way more...it's all dependent on the bid wars between two (or more) people with deep pockets.

Does it have a shot? Absolutely. But I wouldn't submit it unless I wanted to sell it right away.

Here are some pics I took last night with my iPhone. The first 2 shots are to show the slab for brg. The reverse came out looking much truer to life than the obverse. The camera makes pics look washed out and doesnt show the luster very well. The streak you see going across the feathers is actually a line of light purplish/violet toning. I will get some much better pics from my buddy this afternoon.

The slab style is that used from November 2004 through February 2008. Thus, you have a relatively recently graded coin. The ★ designation did exist at the time this coin was holdered, so had they thought it deserved it then they would have assigned it. However, opinions can change and they are willing to also assess the coin for a ★ designation at the same time you would resubmit for a possible upgrade. Some of the older NGC slabs have a premium in the marketplace, but this particular style was used for a long time and carries no "plastic tax" (as I call it when I'm buying an old fatty) ;)

So, I'd say, if you are okay with the wait times right now, and the bit of cost, this baby would be a good candidate for a resubmission for regrade.

    Cheers,
    -Brandon

I've been liking these little dimes more and more as I start seeing them closer... Your obverse slab shot really looks good.. It would be a good coin for a re-submission and possible "star" grade. It would be great if you got the star and the upgrade to 66~~

I've included my only merc dime that I lucked out getting in an even older fatty... I didn't get the price sticker removed at the time I snapped the pics.. I needed to also clean the holder up somewhat.. I thought this was a steal at 90.00 and I suppose there may be a premium on this type of holder...

Firstly rev1774, VERY NICE purchase. To be able to buy a coin with a mintage of less than 12,000 for $90 is a great deal (in my opinion). I love the proof mercs. As for the slab, yours is an older fatty slab with no bar code encoding of the certification number. They were released sometime in August of 1989, and the style was used up until sometime in 1992. According to folks I have seen post before, these were originally all issued with a label in a light brown color. Exposure to light causes some to change to green, and others to change to an almost gray color. Experts insist that NGC never actually purposefully made a green label. Unfortunately, I was only 10 years old in 1989, so I wasn't involved in the markets then and can't corroborate that story. ;)

Nonetheless, these types of slabs do have a bit of a psychological effect on people's perception of the grading standards at the time. Old No-line fatties carry a bit of a premium themselves, but none of the slab premiums are really excessive. I mean, we are talking about maybe a 10% over FMV premium or less. And, if it is a slab collector paying the premium, the hologram on the reverse needs to be fully in tact and no large scratches or abrasions on the plastic. :)

    Nice Merc though! :thumb:

Love the OPs little merc. However, I think the grade given is pretty much right on the spot. Although the reverse is amazing, the obverse has some slight ware on the hair details or else I'm sure it would have no problem getting a 66 and qualifying for a CAC sticker.

The OP's merc is a wonderful piece indeed.. I hope he lets us know if he takes a shot at the regrade..

As to mine, the low mintage/proof was the reason I bought merc and not the slab. I just was amazed at the price for what it was and couldn't pass it up. As for any possible slab premium, that isn't really anything I was thinking about or get excited over.

And to answer the question... I plan on resubmitting around Thanksgiving or so. I plan on getting an lifetime ANA menbership, but I saw a clause where you have to be a member for 3 years before you can purchase a lifetime membership. Anyways, after I get my ANA membership I will resubmit to NGC hoping for a star or possibly MS66.
