For several days now I have been watching to see who would be the first to bring this subject up - but since nobody has - I may as well.

In case you have forgotten, 2006 is the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the American Eagle series. Is there anyone who doesn't know what happened with the 10th anniversary set the mint released ? Ahhhhh - thought that might get your attention.

Just in case your interested, the mint has announced plans to release 2 sets to celebrate the 20th annniversry. All I will say is that there will be gold and there will be silver. There will also be different finishes for the coins in these sets.

Now - I've got the ball rollin. I'll leave it up to you folks to flesh out the details :secret:

3 finishes for the silver set. Let's see... Proof, matte and ??? Maybe a burnished finish like the Goodacre dollars? Maybe also, the 3rd ASE will be colorized like the Canadian bullion coins (hope not). This will definitely be one to get but I predict it will carry a premium $$ knowing the mint. Can you imagine what the phone lines and website delays these sets will create.

I'm going to make a little bet here....
Last time in 1995 when the mint did something like this, there were many because that didn't get them because they were either too $$ or they didn't think they were much good to a set....but now the price has doubled and more....

Since the mint knows that I would suggest that they will sell these sets just alittle bit cheaper that way more people can get them....everyone and his brother will get them....and the price............

I see nothing on the US mints site, even when I use my reading glasses.

The mint is too smart for that. They know that with today's mint customers they can ask a high price and still sell as many as they want to make. The Mint simply throws out the bait, Coin World makes a big deal out of it and the HYPE begins. By the time the product is released, the collector's are so hyped up that they don't care what it costs as long as they get one for their collection and a few to sell for a hefty "feeding frenzy" profit on ebay before the frenzy ends. We can't deny it. We've all been there and done that in some shape or form. Just wait and see what happens to the price of the proof and mint sets when the pres dollars are added making them 15 coin sets.

You won't for a bit yet. The mint made the announcement live at a collectors forum.

And now there are 3. Looks like the mint is really looking to make a bundle this year and use the anniv. as an excuse. Is it really necessary to have 3 separate AE sets or is the mint just taking advantage of an opportunity.

I saw this in Numismatic News and also wonder what the finishes will be. Maybe proof, unc, and matte.

I am thinking that ReggieS is probably right on the types of finish. However, the bigger question is, how many are they going to mint, and are they going to limit the number a person can order? Price is secondary to these questions, IMO.

    Hey Doug...
Does this mean that you are considering returning to the "right-side" even if it is a temporary term?
Just checking it out and thanks for the info...where in the World do you hear such new's?

According to Coin World, the mint is saying the 3rd finish will be a "Reverse Uncirculated finish".

Does anyone know if they are going to bundle the special silver eagles only with the gold again this time or will they make a set that us poor folk can maybe afford?

One of the sets will be a 3-piece ASE set with all 3 finishes. Then a silver & gold 1 oz. set and the 3rd set is yet to be announced. No prices or mintage numbers have been mentioned yet but I'll bet any of the 3 will make us dig into that second compartment of our wallets. If history repeats, then you had better plan on getting each set and spending much $$$ again. The US Mint isn't stupid. If there is a "trophy" in this deal, then you can bet it will be found in the most expensive set (bait & catch).

I'm just wondering if by a 3rd set they are intending on 2 silver/gold sets. One set in proof and the 3rd in unc.

    Not a chance.

That's easy, I do what I always suggest other collectors do - I subscribe to Coin World & Numismatic News and read them religiously. It was the front page story.

And yes Stu - most folks should be able to afford these, at least the first set. The first set will be 3 ASE's - all with different finishes. The mint has not yet announced what the finishes will be. The second set will be a Proof ASE and a Proof 1 oz AGE.

I read about it in Numis News, I thought it was cool and I'm keeping an eye out for them...

I did not mention it here as didn't think too many people would be interested here... I figured I'd get the ole' AEs are just Bullion and only worth their weight...
Sounds like there is some interest though...

So. Anyone see or hear anything else about this. It has been two months since it was posted here and I have not seen anything since.

The May COINage has an article that mentions the 20th anniversary set. Seems the rumor they heard is that the third finish is going to be a reverse proof. Not a whole lot else new in the story otherwise.

None of this is a rumor - it is all fact. The US Mint has made these announcements in public and it has all been reported by the numismatic press in various publications.

Just because the mint hasn't chosen to post it on their web site doesn't mean it isn't true.
