The Early Paper Money of America published by Whitman, author is Newman. I have this book and find it well written and enjoyable. I am afraid I do not know what serious collectors of the series think of it, but as a casual collector of them, it was valuable to me.

Yes, "Early Paper Money of America" by Eric P. Newman is a fine reference as well as an interesting history book. I have the 4th Ed. which is of a very high quality, and can only assume the most recent 5th Ed. is the same. Although not an inexpensive book, in my opinion its well worth the price of admission.

PM me and I can give you the name of an Ebayer who was selling these and they were going pretty reasonably. Or just check Ebay and I am sure you will see the seller. He only listed one a month but hopefully is not out of stock. I think I paid $24 for the 5th edition.

I would agree with the above posts. I find it an excellent book. But if you really get into the study of colonial notes I would purchase auction catalogs as well. They can contain great information not normally found in the reference books as well as nice pictures of rare notes that also might not be in the reference books. Are you thinking of a type set, colony set, of are you going after a specific state of issue or do you even know yet? Each set has its own hurdles.
