Hi. I found an 1864 5 dollar confederate note in my grandmothers old bible... i was just wondering if anyone knew how much it was worth and if they knew of any place in the central illinois area that i can go have it checked out to make sure its real.
    Thanks
    Nikki

Nice catch... guessing one of those tourist type notes. I see them all over here near Gettysburg..

Out here in the west, you go to a touristy place and you can get "real" wanted posters of outlaws!!!!! (facsimiles)

You can also have your own picture put on an old west wanted poster too ;)

Yes it is a tourist type note, However there are many fakes without the “facsimile” imprinted on them. You can normally tell by the inking. The ink used to print the note and the ink used to sign the note were different. Often the ink used to sign the note was made out of berries and is usually a light or dark brown color. Another key identifier is the eyes in the portraits. If the eyes are really dark like charcoal with no detail it is usually a sign of a fake note as the fakes lack a lot of the details of the original. The paper is often the biggest giveaway if holding the note in hand. The fakes tend to be on heavier stock or on thin stock that has been made to look aged. Once you have handled real notes you will have no problem discerning the authenticity of most common notes.

Very nice post sir. Thank you. Its great to have an experienced hand help point these issues out to new collectors. I agree to the extent I have come across fake CW notes versus my own authentic ones.
