Hi all, attaching some pics of a coin I inherited from my grandfather. What I'd like advice on follows: 1.) Can you tell me more about the packaging of this coin? Is this standard way of receiving an uncirculated coin? Worth more to keep in this original packaging? 2.) Trying to buy a house and need the cash. What have you all discovered is the best bang for your buck when selling a coin? Thanks so much for the advice! I'm new to all of this.
Wow, that is a nice coin you have there. The packaging is not something put on by the mint or some company, it is simply a holder commonly used by collectors.
1904 $20 Double Eagle Hi all, New to the forum...would really appreciate knowing how much you think this coin is worth. I realize the gold alone puts it at about $1800. Thanks for any information you may have...curious how much having it be an "older coin" adds to the value. My grandpa wants me to sell it to help pay for a house down payment.
6,256,699 minted which makes it a common dated $20 gold. A nice coin but it will probably be worth about the spot gold price. Do an ebay search. Those holders were very common in the 1960's.
You should submit it to a grading company to get an evaluation of the condition. Age doesn't really play into the value of your coin, and it is one one of the most commonly encountered dates in the entire series, so it is treated as a "generic" date. From what I can tell, however, it could be an MS-63 or better, in which case it could possibly be worth a couple hundred dollars more than the gold price if it is graded by one of the major grading companies.
Wow, awesome coin, common or not! I would get it graded and keep it. It's pretty nice of your grandpa but I would have a real hard time selling it, even if I needed the money. Easier to say i suppose though, if you don't actually need the money... If you think about it, how much would getting that $2000 now really effect your life or what would it mean even 5yrs down the road? Now how cool would it be, in 20 yrs, to be able to show your kids or own grandchildren the $20 GOLD coin that your gramdpa gave you? That alone would be worth more than you could get for it, but like I said it's easy for me to say because I don't need the money... Good luck either way.
