What is the difference between the '64 proof set and the mint set? Were '64 proof sets minted in Philly? Were the '64 proofs good cameo quality? I am seeing sets on ebay saying they are proof but they don't seem to show much cameo or mirror like features.
Very few proofs were cameo in 1964. Proof set are mirror like, mint set are basically higher grade uncirculated coins from that year.
Almost any proof set from 1964 that had cameo or the few deep cameo coins in them have long ago been broken up and the best coins now reside in slabs. Only way your going to see cams in them is if it happens to of been in a private collection and when they show up the feeding frenzy starts.
1964 Proof Sets were made in Philadelphia only and contain brilliant proof coins -- mirrored, but usually not cameo. 1964 Mint Sets contain 1 set of coins from both Philadelphia and Denver, and the coins will be uncirculated circulation quality coins. The packaging of the coins is similar; I don't remember whether the envelopes are the same color or not, but the non-coin inserts will be a little different between the proofs and the mint sets.
