I have a few 1944 Wheat pennies but one of them is a silver color.. I tested it on a magnet but i did not stick!! Does that mean its fake and has no value??
That means it was probably plated since copper will not stick to the magnet. Steel cents, on the other hand, will and 1944 was the year that the US went "back" to the copper based coins but some of the old steel planchets somehow made it into the coining presses creating an ultra rarity.
Yep... we sure did have fun back in the early 1950's, coating every Lincoln cent we had with liquid mercury. Just rubbing it in with our fingers during lunch hour. I probably ingested an ounce or two. Possible explanation for my short term memory loss?
