I was curious if anyone collects German coins. I don't, but I was just thinking that with all the mintmarks, it would be a real pain to try to get every coin in a series, and then in the 1800s there are coins from all the little states. It just seems like way too big of a project. Add to that the fact that in my opinion the German coins are very uninspiring, and I wouldn't think this would appeal to too many people.
I am a fan of the Hannover, Brunswick-Luneberg, and Wolfenbutel coins....more because I collect Horse coins. there are some beautiful coins, but a lot of history homework to keep track of all of the German States and mint-marks. Below is my favorite one so far.
I do not collect German coins by date & mint mark. Also I understand how the depth of German coin collecting could seem endless when you get into all the different types & states. However, I like German coins. Here are a few I have collected in the last year. I bought one this last weekend but need to take a photo.
I also collect German coins. However I do not collect by mint mark. I mostly collect the German Democratic Republic (GDR; German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik. I can imagine how trying to collect the different states, mint marks, and notgeld, etc..would be a daunting task. I really like some of the designs with the all the eagles. Like this one: An eagle holding a shield of an eagle holding a shield. Amazing detail. I have only imaged a few: This is my favorite design of them all. This eagle looks wicked! Some may recognize it as the avatar I used for the last couple years. (5 mark silver proof)
Great toning on that 1913 Prussia 3-Mark! I haven't seen many of these with nice peripheral toning. I have been looking for one of these for my horse set for a while. The same design is also made in a 2 mark version. Very Nice!!! :thumb:
The ones shown here are pretty nice. I think the higher denomination coins are nicer, but I mostly come across the pfennig coins and those are pretty blah.
Hello Brg5658, Have you ever made a thread on horse coins? It would be nice to see some of the horse coins in your collection & also get others at CT to contribute photos. Maybe you could post a new thread. I know that one long time member (Lehigh) has a horse with rider collection. To keep on the subject of German coins, here is another German coin from my collection. I took several different coin photos through the plastic 2x2 and only this one is worthy of posting here.
Yes, sir. Collecting empire, anything and everything from WWI/WWII both in the country and occupied territories, and East Germany GDR. Also paper money from same periods/regions. Not into notgeld and the states, but do collect very certain notgeld notes.
I have not seen very many coins from the GDR (in the States) so my collection of GDR coins is really small. However, last month, I made friends with a man that grew-up in the GDR. He recently visited with me here in the USA. He is now sending me a complete set of the Aluminum chips from the GDR.
I didn't know Lehigh had a horse/rider collection. I always admire his Jefferson nickels, but I wasn't aware of his other interests. I will try to post something sometime, though I think it has possibly been done already....I'll do some searching first. Thanks! -Brandon
While the focus of my German collection is on coins from this country (Federal Republic of Germany, 1949-today), I also have a couple from the states that joined the Federal Republic later, ie. Saarland and the GDR. Earlier pieces (e.g. German states, Deutsches Reich) I have to a limited extent only. Christian
i have a massive collection of german states coins, they are one of my main areas for collecting........
