I think it's great you got the coin for your set. With the verdigris on it, it's not something I would have been interested in, myself. But everyone must start their collections somewhere. Do as I have, complete the set, then be constantly looking for upgrades. You can always sell your lower grade keys and semi keys. That is one aspect of the hobby that keeps it interesting and fun. You are always working toward a better quality set. IMHO gary
I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to use Verdi-Care. BadThad is the expert on it. In my experience it won't "fix" the problem because the damage has been done. But it will arrest any further damage and probably tone-down the disturbing bright green into something a little more acceptable. Would you agree BadThad? Lance.
I agree Lance, but like you said, the damage is done. Once you have pits like this, all you can do is try to arrest the process. VC definately would help to some extent, but don't expect miracles.
How long can/should something soak in verdi-care? I've followed the directions and a few of the smaller spots have disappeared, the bigger ones have dulled, and I can see more of the brown copper in those areas as opposed to bright green. Hooray for progress!
24 hours is the recommended maximum soak time. Glad to hear you made some progress but I doubt you'll get full removal. The verdigris in those pits is very heavy and very tough. It's probably best left in there and deactivated. You should try the toothpick method after a long soak. The pits are big enough you could probably just twist the toothpick over/in them while it's soaking in fluid.
I think you got a great price if under $5. I bet it would flip for $10 plus easily on ebay even with the corrosion, as this date is in high demand.
