Stumbled across these interesting listings on eBay (below). It states in the listing that they're in their original, issue-date packaging. Are these original? If so, who may know what lies within these boxes... Maybe a DMPL? Or a scarce VAM? And in saying this, wouldn't these types of "orginally packages" issued by the GSA go for BIG MONEY?I'm surprised at the moderately low prices the bids are currently at in these auctions... 1st auction-http://www.ebay.com/itm/Very-Rare-Sealed-gsa-1885-CC-Box-Nixon-sale-/220854577059?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item336bf567a3 2nd auction-http://www.ebay.com/itm/Very-Rare-Sealed-gsa-1885-CC-Box-Nixon-sale-/220854577663?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item336bf569ff ... Have any of you seen or possibly purchased this type of item in the past? If so, was it worth what you paid? I'd like to hear anything that anyone has to say, so please leave comments below! Thanks, Brian
How do we know that it is an 1885-CC since the box isn't marked as such? Keep in mind that more than 17 million of the 1885 (Philly) were struck and many of these were also in the GSA sale. If it is a CC, I would be hoping for a VAM-4 "Doubled Dash" in MS65 or better. An MS65 DMPL VAM-4 would be even better! Chris
Chris, can you give me a link at all where I can see the diagnostics for this coin? I happen to have one and have never checked it thanks, Noodle
Here it is on VAMWorld........ http://www.vamworld.com/1885-CC+VAM-4 here is a close-up of the dash.......
To the best on my knowledge none of the white boxes were marked in any way from the GSA I have seen other white GSA sealed boxes sold before and they were not marked. Now it is possible that the original purchaser bought 1885-CC's in the sale and then marked the boxes once they arrived.
The 2011 VAMView lists it at $2500 in MS65. The VAMWorld Condition Census is incorrect. It shows none in MS65 for PCGS, but I submitted mine in January, 2008. Chris
what about a nice MS-62? LOL I don't know if it's the VAM yet, but I want to know if it's worth it to look. My coin is MS-62
I don't know the first thing about these as far as how they were originally packaged and if they are legit. That said, there is no way to know what you are getting. Could you get a great deal? Maybe...but I think it's a big risk. I personally don't like these kinds of gambles...I want to know what I'm getting and am willing to pay more to get it. I think in the long run, you actually pay less this way. But, that's just my thoughts.
