I'd like some opinions on whether it is best to leave new coins in the rolls, or take it apart to see if there are any "goodies, specifically mint errors? What would you do...I have a roll of the 2000 Sacajawea Dollars (remember the Mule uproar?) Wondering if I should open it, just to see if I get that lucky!!

Thanks, :) Mickey...figured out which coin I'm going to use as my avatar, just gotta dig it out and take a digital photo. My son brought home a quarter that I'm sure is a mint error, or several actually, on the one coin. It's really awesome, but so curious, too!

I would hold on to it... It has only been 6 years since they came out and will in my mind only increase in value...If you are in a selling mood though and are going to sell them anyway *shrug* do what you got to do....

Imagine how happy some grandchild would be to see a un-opened roll of sac. dollars 20 years from now...

    just my thoughts...

do the sacs discolor from oxygen or is it grease? will they still be yummy 20 years from now?

Ryan, not really intending on opening it right now. Never sell coins...only collect. Just wanted to see what anyone else would do. I also have a roll of Nevada quarters and 2006 dimes...don't usually collect rolls.

    Thanks! :) Anybody else? Mickey

Yeah if they dont discolor them save 'em, heck try to get a roll from every year or something, that would be pretty cool.

Well, you said yourself that you just collect-not sell. So, do whatever you like better since its your collection and therefore you are the only person that has to be happy with it. Personally, I don't collect rolls. So, I would probably open it up and go through it; I would keep any errors or whatnot I found and probably hang on to a couple of the nicest ones and spend the rest-but thats me. If you like to collect rolls, than keep it just as it is.

Like I tell everyone that is ONLY a coin collector. They are yours. Do with them as you want. For me, I always open all rolls from the bank and if they are ALL Uncircs, I put them into a plastic roll and seal the cover on with tape. Scotch clear if you want to know the type of tape. Don't know why I do this but have been doing that for about 50 years. All look the same as when I put them there. One odd thing is many of the plastic rolls are somewhat oversized meaning it takes 51 cents to make them a solid roll so they don't rattle. As to leaving them in the original roll, I wouldn't because I'm to nosey to see what is actually inside. As I said, they are yours so do what you feel is right for you.

Wow. I was going to throw out this same question. I just bot 20 rolls of the new nickel from the mint, I'm sure I don't want to keep them all, but I wasn't sure if they lost value by busting them out of the origional wrapping. Would anything be different buying from the mint than getting them from the bank?

    What about the shrinkwrapped ones?

I've got some P mint coins that are rolled in a see-through shrinkwrap. How are these going to hold up over time?:rolling:

I can only assume that you are talking about the clear plastic coin rolls. If so, my suggestion would be to remove the coins and place them in coin tubes if you wish to keep them as rolls.

It is cool to hone ms grading skills on bu rolls, superb gems are not all that common, you may go through quite a few rolls to find a superb gem. It is sort of the essence of coin collecting to look through rolls for that one coin.
